Bolt Jewel
my roots
I heard a burst of electricity come from the object that I was working. Shit. That meant that I might have short circuited the main power source. I was working on something that I didn’t even know what it was. Really, I was just bored, trying to think of something to do to occupy my time. While I tried to be practical with my time, I usually found myself working with my hands, which I personally enjoyed. I don’t know what I would do without my hands. They were like personal extensions of myself, that brought me closer to whatever I was working on. I liked to share intimate time with many different things because of time, and as dirty as it sounded, I didn’t care. I enjoyed working on anything that I could get my hands dirty. I loved the feeling of oil dripping onto them. I loved the small bits of electricity that would hit my hand when I might have touched a wire to the wrong pair. I loved feeling the grooves of the machinery gracing my hand as I moved every piece of the puzzle I needed into place. I lived for these moments.
I looked up from the piece of equipment I was working on and took a second to admire the view I was working in front of. My father would kill me if he found out this is where I went to work on things. The lake always gave me a calm mind when I needed to work on something that was jumbling it up. Usually before I started a project, I needed to get the input of the others because that was tradition, but since the reaping, people, including my family, have been weird about pretty much everything. I didn’t know where Lightning went off to and Monsoon was somewhere in the greenhouse of the district. I didn’t bother trying to find them because I knew that they were probably thinking too much about the games themselves. We were lucky. We didn’t get reaped this time around. However, I knew that maybe one day one of our names would be called, and even though I knew that we would all be crushed, one of us would have to go. I dreaded the day that the possibility would come.
The smell of the water made me smile. A smile that made me think of the time I would spend with my family. I loved when we could get together and just work on a project together. It was something I lived for every time we had something new to share. Most families didn’t like us in the district because we were all so brilliant in our own rights. We worked hard, and made sure that our inventions were top of the line before we showed them off to anyone. When we got to sell a couple of them here and there, it brought our family honor. I remember one time when I was in working on a layout for my next invention, instead of giving me ideas, my sisters pushed me in the water. The taste of it filled my mouth, and I shrieked in embarrassment. I didn’t know what to think, and I didn’t think they were going to catch me off guard like that. I ended up splashing both with a big wave of water, but inavertedly, I got my blueprints wet in the process. When I got out of the pool, a cool chill hit my spine and I cursed them both out as loud as I could. I grabbed my wet blueprints and stormed off. Now I laugh about it.
I looked closely at the mainframe and begin to move my hands carefully around it so I don’t get shocked unexpectedly. Of course, it happened from time to time, but I held out my breath that maybe it wouldn’t happen this time. I felt around the mainframe board and clicked a couple things back into place, with no shock following shortly after. I let out a sigh of relief as I lifted the machine back up on its side and dusted off the dirt that was on it. Then I clicked it on, before hearing another raspberry come from the machine. I cursed it, pushing it back on the side and sighing, trying to figure out what is wrong with the very object I wished to work. I looked back out to the water and wished someone was here to help me with it, but of course, there was no one around. I put my hands back on the machine and moved it to the side to get another good look at what I was trying to fix. I worried that I might have to take the whole thing apart. I didn’t have all of the tools necessary to do so though. Luckily, I didn’t live too far from the lake where I was right now.
I looked back up to notice that I wasn’t alone. It was a girl who seemed like she was lost. Of course, I wasn’t surprised that I wasn’t alone. After all, this was a very public place to be in. However, I was working on something that was considered dangerous if something were to go wrong. It wasn’t anything illegal, but it was something that had to be carefully attended too or he could lose a limb or three. He wanted to avoid that. He set the piece of equipment down and looked at the girl who looked like she was lost. “Are you looking for something?” I asked in the nicest way I could. I was working on something that I didn’t want prying eyes to see, but then again, it wasn’t like anyone was going to steal any of my ideas anyway. I always offered for people to try to read my work, but they never could. I tried hard to write in a code that I only understood.
I looked at her again, grabbing a cloth and wiping my hands. Hopefully I would get some answers fast.
wont keep me warm
