Eedun paced in his gym, occasionally straightening weapon displays, preparing for a new career. Greeting a new student always had to be an ordeal at the House of Blood and Pain. Naka wanted every child to see that they were not invisible, that they could not fade into the background and hide behind louder students. Every single teen that walked through his door got the same treatment, not matter how much money they had, their gender, or the color of their skin. He pushed all of them equally as hard, and smacked them all upside the head when they did something ridiculously stupid. Turns out a lot of teenagers don't have a very good knack for survival.
Eedun picked up a simple pole. No blades, no spikes, just a wooden stick with rounded edges. He spun it around in his hands, getting used to the feel of it in his fingers. His new pupil's first lesson would be with just sticks. If you can fight with a stick you can fight with anything.
He paced around the gym, checking on the other students. Correctly their stances, and making them repeat drills. A fourteen year old girl had been doing push-ups in the corner for the last hour and she still had another hour to go. Two eighteen year-olds were lunging at each other with blunted tridents, trying to get the other one out.
Eedun even had a couple of seven year olds on their own little mat in the back practicing roles and defensive maneuvers. You can't start too young.
He heard the door open.
Eedun quickly jogged up to the front door and grabbed another wooden pole. Without checking to see who it was he tossed the pole in the air. If it was his new student, great they could get straight into practice, if not he was testing reflexes.
"Arm yourself!" he shouted, moving his body to a fighting stance, his pole pointed out in front of him ready to smack into skin hard enough to bruise.
