She's born one half of a set, Chrys never too far away. They balance each other out, or so they're told - Kori's personality is spitfire, bubbling and foaming, impatience at the tip of her tongue. Chrys is anything but. They do everything together, from learning how to spar to lazy days spent lounging on the sofa, absentmindedly folding paper cranes. Sometimes Anise joins them, two years older with patience and better dexterity. Kori's always ended up a little bit lopsided, a little bit crunchy. The three of them would sit there for hours, until the sunset turned to dusk turned to nighttime with its dark velvet skies. It made the evenings easier, drowned out the tension from the air. When mother asked them to come with her, it changed. When she slipped out of their grasp with a single farewell, it changed. Their sister became quieter, quick to look down on them with an icy stare. Their father ingrained beliefs and tradition into their mantras. Their home became close to empty, most evenings just Kori and Chrys as the rest of their family finished up at the Center. They'd cook dinner and leave the rest on the stove, finishing homework in their room. Slowly but surely, the house became silent. She grows to resent his teachings, tired of the slump, of the pupils who desert them for centers with more ambition, of his brooding ways; she doesn't know how Anise stands it. Or perhaps she couldn't anymore, for she took two steps forward into a surrealist nightmare and never left. Koriander wouldn't know; a silent sister is not a sister at all. Just strangers, passing by in the night. Again he's placed much on their shoulders, as he walks through the districts, Center, home like a ghost. She sighs, rolls her eyes, gives Chrys a look, and then sets about making things right. Less oversight means more control, and she knows that changes are necessary to make things better. To make things whole. That's fine. Anything he can do, everything she had done, Kori will do better. |
