There are many things I do not know.

How old I was. Where my Father was. How everything started.

There are many things I do know.

The weather. The time. The place where it all happened.

Her name was Marina Maravost. She was my older sister by five years. She was kind and intelligent. We were inseparable. I clung to her side like a leech. Yet, even though my place was sewn to her as though I was her own shadow, I still missed all the early evidence. I did not notice the simple signs. I assume they began when I was around six, around the time Father started missing dinner. I was too concealed by her kindness to see the darkness building around her barriers of light. They say I was just a child, I couldn't have done anything. But those are lies. I could have noticed the signs sooner.

I do not know why it all began, but I naturally have a theory. For now I believe it was because of our Father. I believe he drove our Mother to madness with jealously and rage. He kept coming home later. Their fights kept getting louder. Marina kept getting sick after their fights. She told me it was because she could never sleep while they were shouting. She told me a lie I childishly accepted as tantamount truth. I could have been more observant. She was never sick with the colds that come from lack of rest. She only got weaker as time went on, but I still kept believing her cover up.

Things get clouded after that. They say its to be expected. I still could have said something though. I knew this time for certain something was wrong. Father was barely home aside from their screaming matches. I wonder if he was ever screaming about what she was doing to each of us now. I like to believe so, yet that means he left us there with her anyway. He'll always be as guilty as her, as the Mother who came to give us our shots every night after he would leave. Marina had managed to keep me safe for sometime, but one suffering child of his was not enough for Mother. I think she actually convinced herself that by making us so ill she could bring him back.

One thing I know for certain was our family had money once. During that time though our Mother used up every cent in her state of desperation. Illegal deals for the drugs and the prices only grew I imagine as they discovered how desperate she was. She got wound up in the wrong group naturally. What happened as a result was only to be expected.

That day the sky split into thunderous rain. Through the chemical creation of Mother's fog I remember the clock chiming for seven at night. Mother was yelling at some group through a slammed front door. Marina was motionless on the couch nearby. I thought she was sleeping. I wasn't even really sure what day it was. The next thing you know the window shatters as glass glides through the room. I do not believe the brick was meant to hit me. I barely even felt it through the fog. As red rushed over my eyes and darkness began to quickly cascade over me, I remember the sudden loud sound before the flash that sent my Mother slumping to the floor. My Mother died. Marina died. I somehow did not.

I really thought my hearing would come back. I really believed my Father would come get me from the doctors. Neither ever came true. The brick's damage was contained to a scar above the bright green sphere of my right eye and beneath my sand sewn blonde hair. Apparently it was the whatever mixture my Mother had been giving me which had caused for something to go wrong in my head. According to them I was going to lose my hearing whether the events of that day happened or not. Once they mentioned it, I realized the week before everything Marina stopped responding to my calls. She would just stare at me with her endlessly soft smile.

I could have prevented everything. I should of said something. I should have told someone. But I know I'll never be able to change any of it now. Nowadays I live with my Uncle and Aunt. The money is tight but its better than being in an orphanage. Its better than being with my Father if he actually had known. If he had let everything just happen too. I suppose its better he went missing after the news of our family spread. I think I would have killed him myself if I had ever seen him again. The worst part is my Uncle says I look like his brother. Tall and lean, his eyes and his hair. He even says I have the same small ears and large mouth as him.

My Aunt agrees with my Uncle, but she says I have my Mother's eyes not his. She also says I have her brain. Not evil of course, but brilliant. She notices how I read endlessly to escape existence. She sees how I study relentlessly to make up for the time that was taken from me. She knows how swiftly I learned sign language. I might have my Mother's brain, but I also have the personality she burnt into it with her horror.

Mistrust guides me socially. I avoid contact and communication as much as possible. I use my deafness as an excuse for ignoring people. I cannot bring myself to allow another person close to me. I cannot bring myself to find another person as precious as Marina only to lose them due to my lack of observation or other skill. My Mother made me afraid of human connection. Of friendship and love most of all.

Marianne Maravost above all though, made me cold and empty. I suppress my emotions. I kill my feelings before they can settle beneath my skin. I hold back my tears. I hold back my screams. I live in a mind muddied by constant fear and haunting memories. My past shackles me, and I still have yet to find a way beyond it.
