They were dueling when Malvera sneered those words, swords crossed and locked together. She was a bit offended that Grace Harvard wasn't seeming to be taking their fight seriously — if she were, Malvera is convinced that she wouldn't be standing so tall. It is rare that a girl such as her meets her match in combat, and though she would never admit, Grace is hers. A girl who came from rags and a girl who came from riches; the mere thought that they could be equals in battle would tear apart Malvera's pride.

Grace Harvard and Malvera Drace have been rivals since the day they met. She hates her for her undeniable intelligence and beauty and strength. Grace Harvard comes from a much poorer family than most and Malvera doesn't know why she was admitted to Highland Academy; she had thought the school was only for the elite of District Two. It has occurred to her that perhaps Grace was accepted into the academy by her own merit and not by her family's name, but Malvera has decided that possibility would be preposterous.

The Drace family is an old bloodline and have kept themselves isolated to the wealthier neighborhoods of District Two; Malvera had never really met someone who was not rich before attending Highland Academy. They grow their children to be the same as the parents, ruthless Careers and die-hard elitists with sharp tongues but polite smiles. Malvera is no exception, and being the sole heir of the Draces, she has quite the expectation to live up to. (Which involves being better than girls like Grace Harvard, not equal to.)
