The food here was weird, and I couldn’t believe that they ate like this here in the capitol. When I looked at what they were serving, and how fancy it was, I wanted to stand up and walk out. I didn’t understand why everything had to be a show when you came here, even when I walked off that train, people berated us with applause and cheer. I couldn’t handle it. For a moment, I thought about bolting right then and there, but I knew I wouldn’t get far. For now, I was going to have to learn how to play ball.

I did have to admit, the food did taste good. It didn’t remind me of home, which was probably for the better. We didn’t have much in ten, but I always made sure to find a way to feed the kids at the orphanage. While it wasn’t as extravagant as this, I thought it was enough to keep them at bay. At least, I didn’t hear many complaints, except for maybe Rogue. As much as I hated to admit it, she was on my mind just as much as Marley was. I clutched my locket as I took a bite of what looked to be chicken in front of me. As much as I wanted to grimace at the fact that I was eating something so luxurious, I couldn’t deny that it tasted good. So instead, I just chewed it up and swallowed, trying not to show any real emotion.

I was looking down for most of lunchtime, until I heard a clink and another body sitting at the table that I was at. It was the boy was district nine. I couldn’t quite remember his name, but then again, we really didn’t converse much outside our districts to begin with. I was a little jealous that people were getting along and mingling quickly however, I had to play the long game. Either that or force my way into conversations.

I just had to make peace with the fact that I might have to go at it alone for a while.

I hated that thought.

I waited until the boy looked down before I stole a couple glances from him. He was handsome, I did have to admit that, but of course, we weren’t here to court each other. No. We were here to kill each other. I looked back down at my chicken and cut out another bite, trying to figure out what I was going to say to him. I hated that I always stuck my foot in my mouth when it came to talking to anyone. I must have not been used to public settings like I was in ten. I just continued to hold onto my locket, taking another bite of my chicken and thinking about what my sister must be going through right now.

I just hoped that she was alright. That she was surviving.

Not just for me.

But for all of us.

Simple times, four figures around the table with their heads held above their plate. With every smile, I could see a piece of mother’s home delights travelling around their mouths. Much loved treats and we were never afraid to share them with each other. Each conversation, different from the other, my sisters would recite their day and mother would praise us for our achievements. Mother could never fill the plates, but I always appreciated them. Just a moment to be with my family around the table twice a day. An hour to reconnect before the day began and when it ended.

Then it just turned silent.

On extra chair besides the table but there was only ever one conversation, the pair of them, my father and half-brother, dishing out insults as they filled their gut. Only me and my sisters could deliver the accepted silence.

Now in this dining hall, with my plate stacked the same way mother used to do it, there are more bodies around the tables and I am far from slipping into silence amongst the ruckus. Each table has an empty space, but each space has a prying pair of eyes, I am not welcome to share this meal with most of them.

Just quick glances and my eyes fall back onto the plate. Every second, my eyes sink into those of the careers and the obvious villains of this game, my body slumps into the position that father so kindly erected for me as he invaded mother’s home, my only defence from the anxieties outside.

All I need is a shadow, a place to disappear as I tame my restless stomach. So much is circulating in my mind, necessities such as tucking into dinner are so easily missed. It was only my escort who was my reminder to attend this vital daily event.

I have barely ventured from the quarters of District Nine, much like my half-brother, those that I am sharing a meal with today would rather slip poison into my cup than share a half hour conversing over poultry and greens. My only chance is a compromise. So, I cannot slip away but I can at least seek out the decent and place my plate besides theirs

Further investigation and the female from the District next door seems like the easy company. I don’t even have to speak a word in this compromise, maybe a nod, a smile or no acknowledgement at all.

A little pinch of courage and I uninvitedly join the female, placing my plate and cup of strawberry juice besides her own collection of treats. One glance into her direction and my eyes set on the simple gifts that I picked out for myself.

Another glance into her direction and a dash of worry begins to shadow over me. My teeth sink into my bottom lip and I drop the cutlery from my hands. As the stainless-steel bounces onto the surface, a metallic clang brings all the attention in the room to me. Oh no.

And so, the panic takes hold and I turn my full body towards the girl. ”I am sorry, do you mind if I sit here?”

I thought about how much I actually missed having people that I knew around me. Sure, there was Caine, but Caine only could do so much for me. He reminded me of home, and that was all. There really wasn’t anything else that kept me here, and from the looks of it, I didn’t have too many friends here. On the other side of the spectrum, I didn’t have many enemies. I seemed to blend into my surroundings pretty well, however, we were pretty early into the training week.

I thought about what family dinners were like now. Sure, we weren’t a family in the traditional sense, but I took care of those children like they were mine. Seeing as I was the oldest of the bunch, I worked close with our foster mother to make sure that they were all taken care of. So that meant that I helped with a lot of the cooking. I became good at foraging for things and from time to time to time, I could figure out how to make a trap here and there. Sometimes we would have a lot and sometimes we would have a little, but those were the times when I realized that it didn’t matter how much food was on the plate, but how much we all cared about each other.

The pound was always going to be a scary place at first, however, once you got used to the inhabitants, it became a place of love and acceptance. We showed our teeth at first and barked on whims that I couldn’t even give an answer why we did to. We protected each other, no matter how much older or younger we were. Sometimes I protected them more than I should have, but I didn’t care. These were kids that I grew to know fondly.

I missed them so much.

The people here though seemed different, rather flighty, and untrustworthy. Some of them seemed like they were antsy to get into the arena and kill each other. Some of them seemed like they didn’t want to talk to anyone period. Some of them seemed like they were lost. They were all lost though, so everyone had that face on them. I didn’t think too much about it because I knew what everyone was thinking already. We all wanted to survive.

However, we weren’t.

23 of us were going to die, and there was nothing any of us could do about that.

And when the boy from nine joined me at my table, I thought that maybe there was one soul who didn’t want to be like the others. One that did want to try to have a conversation with me. One that wanted to break the boundaries of silence that built itself on our quiet demeanors. He could have sat anywhere else, but he chose the table that I was occupying. To be fair, I was the only person at this table, and I could already tell who was starting to get along with who. There was already a separation in the people here, and I felt like I could have cut through it with a butter knife. I didn’t think it would happen so fast, but some of the people here were naturals when it came to their extrovert-ness. It left me at a disadvantage, but one that I couldn’t work around. I just had to wait for the right time for me to step in a start a conversation. From there, it was up to the other person to either accept or decline. I always hoped they would accept, but I never knew.

So when I saw the boy sit down, I thought this could have been my chance to make another friend here that wasn’t Caine (though I couldn’t really call Caine a friend either). However, I didn’t know how to really approach the conversation. That was why I couldn’t concentrate on him. Well, when he wasn’t looking. The noise level in here became ear shattering for a moment, and when my ears popped I finally looked at the boy, who looked like he was weary of me.

”No of course, you can sit here. I don’t mind.” I said to him with a small smile, putting down the fork and knife and taking a sip of the water I grabbed from earlier. ”Sorry, my mind is just a mess right now. Can’t seem to think straight.” I wiped the food from my mouth with my napkin and placed it down on the table. ”Um, uh, Bella.” I wasn’t sure if this was the appropriate time for me to act like a fool, but honestly, I didn’t know how else to go about this. All I knew was that if I was going to make any allies, here, I was going to have to mingle.

Even though I wasn’t sure how I felt about it.
