Sat by the window, Demelza watched as District Five faded away like a river rushing downstream- the dense city, smokestacks and smog slowly disepated into sparser houses and factories until they had left the District behind all together and they were riding through dense forests. With every passing moment as she watched with tearful eyes as her home disappear behind her, as she hurtled with uncertainty towards her future, she tried to let the memories go that made her heart ache with grief but there was just the one that refused to let go.
Paxton was her tether and every which way she looked she saw him in the world around her as it unfolded before her very eyes as the train rolled along its tracks. They passed medows upon medows of wildflowers, nestled in the cacoon of the forests, bright splashes of colour in the otherwise dark and dangerous landscape of the wilderness. The meadows themselves reminded her of the one they would frequent back home together- ever since she was little he would take her there after the war had become too much for them both.
Now she was leaving him behind to fight all by himself.
She was dragged back to the reality that she was going somewhere very different from home by the constant droning tone of the escort whose bright, fluorescent hair gave Demelza a headache just glancing at it. She rubbed her fingers against her furrowing brow, resting her head against the window, groaning as the escort launched into another tale of the Capitol and the apparently extensive Pocket Whale collection. With each nattering word, Demelza could feel her temper thinning, quickly.
With a sigh, she looked over towards her District partner- Johannes. She didn't really recognise him but wondered if Paxton had known him. She stopped her thoughts short of telling herself she would ask him when she got home- chewing her lip, Demelza shuffled along the sofa towards the boy. "Do ya reckon he ever shuts up?" she asked him in a low whisper as she looked over to the Escort "or he just loves the sound of his own voice?"
