Demelza burst out onto the rooftop, her heart within her throat, suffocating her as she gasped for air as she practically flung herself out into the cool night air. The world span as the rooftop door slammed behind her, causing her to flinch away from the noise as her mind struggled to make out that this was reality and she was no longer dreaming. Her chest heaved erratically as she tried to swallow as much of the clean air as she possibly could but it tasted foul on her tongue, almost foreign. She was so used to breathing the thick, smoggy air of five that she didn't know what real fresh air tasted like.

She decided she hated it.

As her mind slowed, calming itself in the wake of the tempest of dreams, Demelza slowed her sprint to a walk before she lowered herself to sit against the cold concrete floor of the rooftop patio, still panting as she hungrily gulped down the sickening air as quickly as she could. Closing her eyes, Demelza allowed herself to lie back, arms slackening to her side instead of clutching at her chest where her heart was still fluttering under skin and bone and the cotton fabric of her pajamas.

"Fuck." she whispered out, as she ran her hand through the sweat drenched mop of hair atop her head.

“It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.”

GETTING HEARD BETWEEN THE BLACK AND WHITE."

Every moment spent in the Capitol is one where Atticus Manor is reminded of the toxins of the Arena and the days.. months.. years.. that followed him. Today, however, the first day upon arriving in the Capitol for the Games, was quickly becoming one of the hardest. Some days are just unbearable, starting with one thing going wrong, and then life would spin into a hurricane, unleashing relentless winds into the atmosphere, and most noticeably in this case, the most recent Victor from District Three’s heart.

The elevator shut its doors autonomously after moments of Atticus leaning up against the wall least visible from the ground floor of the Training Center. With his eyes half closed, Atticus chose the level of the multi-floor center that would take the longest time to reach: the rooftop level.

Folding his hands together on his forehead, slowly he slid down in the corner of the elevator. The moment that perhaps is just needed to sit for a minute and cry was this moment in his time, and he wasn’t afraid to do it.

Every time the elevator dinged to reach a new floor, he tried to sniffle and wipe his the tears from his eyes, but instead the tears just continued to well themselves in his eyelids. It was when the elevator stopped it’s noises and the doors opened that Atticus finally rubbed his eyes one last time.

Out in the middle of the rooftop was a girl with short-cut blondish hair. A tribute, most likely.

Clearing his throat, he spoke out to her.

”Rough night?”

Her heart slowly steadied. It had been months since she had been at the mercy of the night terrors, torn from the possibility of waking by the dreams that had once been a reality and for a while she had hoped that maybe overcome the demons that crept in the shadows of her bedroom at night. Her heart had deflated as the hope she might get a goodnight sleep slipped through her fingers, perhaps the last few days had dredged so many emotions to the forefront of her mind- her brother being alone in Five, how her cousins had met their ends, perhaps it had been all too much for her to handle and she’d been too stubborn to admit it.

Opening her eyes, Demelza was met with the dusky orange sky that washed over the Capitol sky. The night sky seemed diseased, where Demelza would have so easily have been able to pick out glittering stars, painted in streams across the abyss of space, she could only find the firy orange wash of light pollution leaching into the sky. She felt the pangs of homesickness tug at her stomach, the tether of home tugging at her heartstrings. She allowed a small sigh as she allowed her eyes to close again, trying to imagine what the sky was like at home.

“Rough night?”

Demelza’s eyes shot open at the sound of the voice. Sitting up, Demelza quickly found the stranger who had joined her on the rooftop. It was no stranger- Atticus Manor stood, red eyed and as messy haired as he had looked the day she had first seen him on her television screens. Despite not having changed on the outside, barely aged at all, she could see it in his eyes.

Nervously, she ran her fingers through her hair, clearing her throat softly as she spoke “Yeah, you could say that. Sorry, didn’t realize I wasn’t alone… I can go if you’d like...Atticus? Right?”

“It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.”
