My eyes follow them as they walk through the crowds.

Tributes, one by one, lining up for their deaths like pinballs neatly stacking into place. I don't know what to feel, if I should even look at them so closely. I don't think that I want to care about them in any way at all. I don't think that I physically can. I don't know which would be worse, caring or not at all, I haven't been able to solve that question.

My hand holds the drink in my hand tightly, pink champagne bubbling softly in a slender flute. This is a celebration, an exciting moment. It's the beginning of the yearly festivities. Another screen in the corner pictures Caesar, giving a running commentary on the tributes as they are reaped in real time, telling the Captiol every tidbit of information allowed to him from their personal files.

I already know more than I want to.

My hand shakes ever so slightly, and I ignore everything but screen. A few of them smile confidently out at the crowd and I feel my stomach twist. twenty-three of them only have a couple of weeks to live.

Zaya Reine

Her gloved fingers fiddled with the stem of her glass, her lips neglecting the pretty, pink bubbles. Her eyes were on the screen, watching the new round of tributes being plucked out of obscurity. She tried to picture these fresh faced children in the hellscape they had designed and yet she couldn't. They didn't fit with her mental picture.
Not yet anyway.

"Which one do you think it will be?" she asked, ripping her gaze away from the footage of the district two male mounting the stage. This being her second time as Gamemaker, Zaya was feeling rather attached to her previous victor. Ansgar Todd was a strong fighter in the games, but also had a strong personality. An instantly recognizable aura about him that made everyone notice him. It's what pushed him to the peak of success. Zaya couldn't feel any of that from the screen before them. She was bias. Her mind floating elsewhere in victors of games past, and moments half forgotten and half revered.

"They all look like mutt food to me," she said bitterly before finally taking a swig of her champagne. If she didn't like any of them, she wouldn't care when they died.

Nilima watched the footage, twirling a glass of hard liquor between her fingers. Her body was sprawled sideways over her chair, legs hitched up over the armrest. She paid her glass little attention, her gaze glued to the screen, watching for the subtle hints of stardom in the faces of the damned. Undoubtedly, the Careers stood out with their shining smiles and straight posture. If they were nervous, they didn’t look it; this confidence would allow them the ability to entertain.

They were entertainers, after all -- not killers.

"Which one do you think it will be? They all look like mutt food to me,” Zaya said, and Nil grinned, bringing her feet back to the ground. She stood, pacing with glass in hand.

”You’re right about that. They’re scared shitless,” she said, pausing as the face of the District One female flashed across the screen. Nil saw a certain ferocity in her gaze, and she pointed at the screen. ”But it doesn’t matter yet. We need someone to give us a good show.”
