78th Muttation List

Bigfoot - (throughout) Standing at a height of fifty feet, the ‘snow man’ is a sight, that is, if you manage to catch a glimpse of him. His footprint haunts the arena between the heavy snows, creating deep indents where he has walked. The gamemakers have coined him ‘Bigfoot’ due to the span of them. His home is inside the mountain and is only enterable by scaling a sheer cliffside. Covered in a carpet of shaggy fur from head to toe, Big Foot’s main characteristic other than his feet of course, are the long claws that extend from his large hand-like paws and the tusks protruding from his mouth. The only issue is that Big Foot’s demeanor is far too mild to make a good mutt. A herbivore by nature, his interests include preserving the landscape around him and uprooting trees to eat. When curled up in rest, he resembles a large, fluffy dog and after countless attempts to control him, it’s been proven that he will only attack when severely provoked.

Tredgehog - (throughout) A bizarre mix of a hedgehog and a tree, science has likely gone too far with this Capitol-designed muttation. Why did they do it? Well, it wasn’t entirely on purpose. The Capitol labs were attempting to engineer a breed of hedgehog adept at surviving longer than their regular counterparts, predictably funded by someone who was upset that their hedgehogs kept dying. While this breed of hedgehog does live quite a bit longer -- actually, one of them has never actually been seen to die of natural causes since their creation -- their skeleton has been replaced with an elaborate root cardiovascular system that stumps (haha, get it) Capitol scientists to this day. They’re most easily recognized by the small plume of branches extending upwards from the back of their skull, both plant-like and animal-like as the veins blush red beneath the bark. As most muttations are, these are being repurposed for use in the Games. Unfortunately, the Gamemakers have yet to figure out what really makes them tick, and as such they don’t seem to be particularly aggressive. Yet.

Horned Puma - (Flagging Trees, Cornucopia, Hot Spring) This muttation is a fearsome mix that carries the face and sharp antlers of a caribou and the dexterous body, claws, and teeth of a cougar. It was created out of necessity; the Capitol has struggled to rid the Capitol’s mountain borders of the wild caribou populations that occasionally venture into city limits. What better than to make a predator who looks like a friend? Much like their feline counterparts, these mutts like to hide, wait, and pounce at the opportune time, always the face of patience. It’s no surprise the Horned Puma is effective at bringing down deer, caribou, and given the opportunity… the unsuspecting tribute.

Wraith Grizzly - (High Peak, Flagging Trees, Moguls) This hybrid bear contains the genes from a grizzly bear, a chameleon, and a top secret camouflaged animal, allowing it to blend almost perfectly into the landscape. Originally created to delight audiences at one of the Capitol’s zoos, this bear is perfectly normal aside from the fact that it can practically appear and reappear without notice. While Capitol onlookers could spend hours watching the bear blend into its landscape, the Gamemakers had a better idea: why not use these monsters to scare the crap out of tributes?

Herd of Tiny Tiny Rude Alpacas (Hottra) - (Hot Spring, Snowflower Meadow, Moguls) As their name suggests, these muttations are very small versions of normal alpacas, standing at about ten to twelve inches tall. Unlike other mutts, these are not mixed with other animal DNA; instead, they’ve been bred over time for their small size. The meat of a tiny tiny rude alpaca is a delicacy in the Capitol, but unfortunately there’s not a lot of it on a single animal. That’s why these are highly social creatures, belonging to groups of six or more. They’re said to be rude mostly because they’re afraid of most humans; if anyone gets too close to a herd, they’ll collectively spit on you. If you venture even closer, threatening the herd, the brave leaders of the pack will lash out with their teeth, which have somehow gotten sharper after years of selective breeding. Though they’re not predators by any means, they’re skittish creatures who won’t hesitate to defend their ranks.

Ice Bumbles - (throughout) Due to troubling low temperatures during growing season, these icy bees were designed to withstand the cold to promote the health of crops. They work spectacularly, and they’ve got the added bonus of being sturdier and more aggressive than the normal bee. They thrive in cold and warm environments alike, but they like to build their nests in secluded areas where they can be completely hidden. Thus, you’ll often find their nests underground or under the snow. When their hives are threatened, they tend to be more vicious than normal bees, and their stings pack an intense punch. They move collectively, attacking their target in synchronized defense. In short: watch where you step, tributes.

Stout Trout - (Hot Spring) To keep up with the rising Capitol demand for seafood, scientists created the Stout Trout, an even sturdier version of the basic fish that bears its name. The DNA combination that yielded this monstrosity is, as of right now, classified. They bear a strong resemblance to their normal counterparts… if you ignore their size and their fearsome teeth. They have a lot of problems that make fishing them fairly complicated, so they have to be bred in Capitol fisheries under close supervision. The most troubling issue is their affinity for animal flesh; they’re known to take off fingers of the fishery workers with a well-timed bite.

Mountain Goats - (throughout) The strangest of creatures, these goats were bred from their ancestors in the purest form possible. Not much adjusting was needed, the only difference really between them and their original species is their height. Where most male mountain goats stand at about a meter in height, Capitol mountain goats stand at two and a half. Bred for their beauty, the most iconic part of their appearance are their long, curved black horns that twist and turn up around in their heads forming two large spears and growing a ring in length for every year that they live. These goats were prominently used for fashion and kept as pets by the very wealthy, that is, until one gored their owner rather savagely. Now they only dot the mountain side of the current arena.

Tree Rabbits - (Flagging Trees, Cable Car Lift) Surprises of surprises, here we actually have a mutt that did what it was supposed to. These critters were bred as convenient food sources, and have done a phenomenal job of living up to their expectations. Mostly rabbit, but with wings and hollow bones from the blended DNA of several birds, they live in or under trees. They are completely docile, allowing their breeders to kill them without fuss. However, their breeders must all but hand-raise them, as it takes some time for them to become accustomed enough to someone to allow close approach. When faced with strangers, especially loud ones, they are easily scared and will run or take flight, whichever gets them away faster.

Demo Deer – (Cornucopia, Flagging Trees, Cable Car Lift) The term "Demo Deer" --short for Demolition Deer-- is actually a misnomer in the fact that these 'Deer' are not actually deer at all. Instead, this large species is actually a blend of moose and rhino DNA. These were developed to clear forests, fences, buildings, and the etcetera. They have giant antlers by their ears, as well as a large pointed horn in the center of their face. These 'Deer' have leathery gray skin, though have slender legs and a thin face.

Saint Concerto - (throughout) Those tales of alpine rescues has been reborn in this muttation. This dog mutt has inherited the Saint Bernard power and tail, a Doberman Pinscher's face and sleekness, and Siberian Husky fur and coloration, to exert a determined aura while plowing through the snow. From a distance, one might think that the Doberman Pinscher head is merely sticking out from a fur coat. They bear gifts, Santa's little helpers they are. Strapped around their necks are kegs full of a certain liquid (water, whiskey, whatever), and all they want to do is unload their shoulders and be free - even if their denseness leaves them ignorant to some unfortunate fates. Created by the Capitol to assist the army in any snowy ventures with heartwarming alcohol and company, they lost their purpose by the Dark Days’ end, some becoming arctic pets, many let loose. For the Games, they have been brought back, bearing their presents; but, inside the Capitol, people are smiling, whispering about the "Botulinum Hound" that is hiding, the wolf in rabbit's skin.

Hircusxes (credit to Shrimp) - (Snowflower Meadow, Moguls, High Peak) Combination of artic foxes and mountain goats, these mutt are able to withstand the cold due to their white fox-fur textured pelts (their fur is now a luxury in the Capitol). Originally bred as a way to deliver both dairy products (a majority of the mutts were female) and warmth fur coats to the Capitol at the same time, there was just one small problem. Hircusxes were noted to have a violent temper and frequently attacked handlers with their large, ebony-hued horns. They were quickly discontinued and put into zoos for Capitol entertainment post-Dark Days, and now are also used to terrorize tributes with their mean demeanor.

Hellcats — (Hot Spring) Though the name "Hellcat" was an attempt by the creating scientists to pull from the wild popularity of their canine counterparts, this feline certainly does look like a beast straight out of hell. With DNA borrowed from tigers, lions, and the extinct saber-toothed cats, this felid has a luxurious orange coat with black-maned males. Bred for aesthetic reasons as well as for the agility that their hound counterparts lack, Hellcats have eyes that span from amber to flame in color, ringed by a dark circle of black, as well as eight-inch fangs that protrude from their mouths at all times. These cats are excellent climbers and battle strategists; additionally, they have a great sense of smell, though not to the degree of the hound version.

Tumnus — (throughout) Half goat, half monkey, and roughly the size of a young child, these mutts were originally bred to be highly efficient trash collectors. They have curly reddish fur, brown eyes, short pointed beards, horns on their foreheads, the lower body of a goat, and the torso of a primate. Combining a goat's predilection to eat nearly anything with a monkey's opposable thumbs and upper body climbing abilities, no debris was beyond their reach. The experiment was highly successful, particularly in colder climates, as their thick coats of fur would lead to heat exhaustion in warm weather. Unfortunately, it was discovered that they were prone to hoarding most of the parcels trash they collected and would become dangerously territorial when unsuspecting citizens wandered across one of their food hoards. They are otherwise mild-mannered and even somewhat friendly, although this is usually due to hopes that the person they're encountering will have something shiny and new for them to lay claims to.

Lynx -- (Hot Spring, Snowflower Meadow, Cornucopia) A larger, more intimidating version of the Lynx spider it was originally bred to hide in trees and catch out rebels in webs during the colder months. Designed to withstand all measures of cold weather it has adapted to these harsh conditions very well. With a long body and eight long legs it has the typical appearance of a spider, ranging from around 30cm big to 40cm they are hardly appeasing to the eye. Each one of its legs is covered in spikes, each spike having formed to its body at a young age, they are completely made of ice. These critters take on a frosted look, instead of their usual vibrant more orange coating they are a paler blue, with darker shades over their back.

Saber Tooth -- (throughout) Taking after the older legend, of the fearsome saber tooth tiger, it was as large and powerful as the name suggests. The Gamemakers, however, found this boring, it seemed as though this mutt was like most others, so instead of giving it two powerful hind legs they gave it a seals tail. It’s strong front legs were used to move it about, whilst it dragged its tail along. A beast more accustomed to water, could also survivor on land with it’s new look. The typical enlarged fangs hung from its mouth, dripping with poison as it hunts for its next prey. It’s a particularly slow moving creature, but with its razor sharp claws it’s nothing to be taken lightly, cats, after all, are the best hunters of all.

Ghares -- (Moguls, Cable Car Lift, Snowflower Meadow) These mutts are the size of an arctic hare, and just like the arctic hare they take on the rough shape of these snow dwelling creatures. From there, though, the resemblance ends. With an almost ice looking coat you cannot be fooled to think that they are soft and easy to teach. Ice coats each and every individual hair on its pelt. Its eyes gleam with a red sheen to them. You cannot see its teeth, but in its mouth are three rows of sharp, spiky teeth that drip with venom. It was originally designed to be a household pet, but was adapted to the arenas climates by giving it the icy coat and poisonous bite. Typically they like to move around in groups of two or three, knowing that hunting down food for them to eat is easier that way. They are not herbivores and prefer to eat animals smaller than themselves, and will, on occasion even take on some that are larger.

[Delivery] Word - (throughout) The docile and loyal Delivery Words (commonly called 'Words') are extremely adaptable and capable of crossing lands and bodies of water to deliver mail for the cost of a couple sunflower seeds. Delivery Words usually prefer to fly away from combat. Their meat is highly delicious and packed with essential vitamins. It is not hard to spot a Delivery Word, with their black feathers, gray-specked eyes, and tendency to honk loudly; however, Words can be hard to capture with its ability to withstand high acidity.

Oculin (credit to Arrows) - (Hot Spring) The Oculin were the creation of Capitol Scientists seeking to destroy any access to the waterways and the seas during the dark days. This terrifying mutt took months to perfect but when the genetics of the jelly fish, starfish, squid, and shocking bits of plant fused together the results were highly effective. The Oculin are approximately the size of the human head and they are nearly impossible to see since due to their jellyfish genes they are practically translucent. Located on this round sphere body are two eyes as well as twenty long thread like tentacles. These tentacles swiftly navigate dark waters. What makes Oculins special is they latch with star fish like suction to beaches and rock formations near the water. From there they send these twenty translucent tentacles sprawling across the ground around them. When their trapped tentacles are stepped upon, they attack with their two spiked tentacles while the others ensnare their prey.

Gra-Gnats (credit to Charade) - (High Peak, Moguls, Flagging Trees) Sometimes, muttations are a result of Capitol geneticists creating an animal that filled a particular niche in society until it became obsolete. Sometimes, muttations are a holdover from the dark days, brought back to life from the annals of history for the entertainment value. And sometimes, sometimes, muttations were a mistake. Gra-gnats belong to the third category. Originally envisioned as a pet, if you can believe that, the Gra-gnats are a strange creature. One part gnat, one part rat, one part crab and one part hummingbird. They resemble rocks about the size of a palm, with wings that unfurl from their bodies and beady little black eyes. And teeth. Way more teeth than anything that small should have. Who wouldn't want a pet rock that you could feed? As it turned out, the answer was next to nobody, mainly because they forgot to make sure the damn things were herbivores and the Gra-gnats had a nasty habit of forming huge swarms, biting off fingers, and literally flinging themselves at people like rocks thrown out of a slingshot; and believe it or not, they pack a nasty punch. The plans scrapped, they were put in the queue for potential arena mutts instead, as rocks that weren't rocks but little bastards instead were sure to liven up the entertainment factor.

Mutt Contest Winners:

Glass Teal (credit to Kay) - (High Peak, Hot Spring, Cornucopia) Native to the high reaches of District One and Two, the Glass Teal has a number of advantageous mutations, nearly all of which have occurred naturally. Their sleek, compact size makes them one of the smallest duck-like water fowl. Any larger and even their genetic quirk which allows them to process very low levels of oxygen wouldn't be enough to save them. Their coloring comes, like many other animals, from an attempt to blend in. Of course, having a glossy, ice blue coat does not stop these rather unintelligent birds from running into windows... Luckily there are few homes built inside of arena.

Chatterbox (credit to Windy) - (Cable Car Lift, High Peak) Created in recent years to combat higher numbers of Wanderers, Avoxes, and District Thirteen contacts successfully navigating the mountains around the Capitol, the Chatterbox originated as an idea to help surveil the mountains, as they were hardy creatures and cameras could be affixed to their horns.. Its pelt is perfectly white and blends easily with the snow to mask its darker underbelly, hanging down around it almost like a cloak. The forelimbs are lengthened, joints jutting sideways and making a creaking-pop like knees bent the wrong way whenever in motion. Its back legs are strong enough to hold the creature upright and bi-pedal a handful of steps, allowing it to rise to nearly 7ft tall. The underbelly and face of the creature are shredded, bone exposed and skin seemingly rotting, releasing a foul, lingering smell. It's maw is elongated, dark lips exposing broken teeth. Both horns are missing, another unsightly wound. They hunt in small, efficient packs, and prefer to do so in the dark. The last thing you want to hear at night is the telltale slow hiss of drawn in breath through broken teeth, followed by a heavy exhaled, "cht cht chtttt," echoed and responded to from all sides.

Puff Puff (credit to Kousei) - (throughout) Originally intended to be cute pets for children, these mutts were eventually taken off of the market after many owners complained about their jewelry and possessions being taken. Puff Puffs are small, round, fluffy, and they have dark eyes. They have tiny legs and small arms and they waddle from size to side to move forwards. They tend to have white fur, but capitol have been genetically modifying them to come in a variety of cuter colours (red, pink, baby blue etc). When not moving, they tuck their legs in and put their heads in the snow and just lay there. Upon accidentally stumbling upon this mutation, it will likely give the tribute a small bite for disturbing it (only about 3 damage). While the tribute may be tended to kill it for this transgression, they just can't because they're OH SO CUTE with their big round eyes and furry body. The puffle will curl its limbs around the tribute and stick with them throughout their time in the arena. They don't do anything, they're just there to sit, watch and definitely be fed. These mutations are greedy and must he offered 1 item every night in order to stay by the tribute’s side, or else they'll leave to find the nearest tribute who will offer them any item of their choosing. If the tribute is killed it will find the closest tribute (perhaps after a brief moment of mourning it's fallen owner) and latch onto them.

Arctic Porcufoxes (credit to Lance) - (Flagging Trees, Moguls, Snowflower Meadow) Small, cute, and seemingly harmless, the porcufoxes were intended to be ticking time bombs specially designed to take out resistance cells in the colder climates of Panem. Set a pack of the miniature, snow white creatures loose near a known base, charm unsuspecting rebels with their affectionate manner, and then once they were inside, boom - a signal sent to their brains transformed them into rabid, slavering beasts, their soft fur hardening into needles sharper than any knife. For a while, it worked, for there was always that one animal lover charmed by the cute little things, until both Capitolite scientists and rebel intelligence realized that the needle-fur and the programming alike quite literally melted outside of frigid environments. Thus, they were tossed aside as a failed experiment, turning into beloved pets by the occasional daring Capitolite, until a veteran Gamemaker plucked them from obscurity to test their effectiveness on the battlefield again. Modifications were made; no longer were the porcufoxes affectionate and docile, nor rabid and aggressive, but somewhere in between, a cautious, territorial creature born from the mix. The needle fur was permanently activated as well, and by giving the porcufoxes the ability to fire these needles at their foes at will.
