[attr="id","teddyText"]The sound of crashing water echoing in his mind. A hollow sound that resides with him every day that he lives. The muffled voice of Emberly Lowe as she tells him the truth of what he was coming to life in his mind. The feeling of heat rising behind his skin as he holds the bag in his hand tightly. The feeling of sand in his shoes and the phantom pain of his missing calf coming to life, until he just crashes like the luminescent lights that light the interior of a District Six hospital. Children's books in a bag on his shoulder from the time spent reading to the terminally ill who may not see another year. Hope in each of the children's eyes fading just slightly more.

He's seen it multiple times before. Rory's eyes. Rhetoric's. Ree's. Emberly's. Lux's. The light fading from living eyes, but the terminally ill's eyes were slower and just as painful to watch. Teddy's dropped everything for multiple days just to read to the children that dream of fighting back. A small frown pulls on his face as the air goes chilly in a moment. Bundled up in a warm jacket that he's been able to afford for once, doctors wave at him as he passes. People's eyes coming to his own knowing of what happened to Serena Fennel like her blood was on his own hands. Trudging past them, he remembers days where it felt like things made sense.

Days of when he was too young to worry about life or death at a young age. Running around the streets, being little terrors as they claimed their own fun. Adults giving them little chuckles and smiles because the district needed more life in it. All he could see was how dead everything was. A part of growing up was losing the light that seemed to outshine everything else until it slipped out of existence to a drab gray of emptiness. Where adults self destruct themselves to just feel something, anything.

District Six, home of science and medicine, had a drug problem that no one talked about. Including the mayor, who was alright, but not his favorite person. Death looms around corners for them all with bone-like features. Always waiting for the moment to take them away to wherever else there was. A hell probably had his name on a throne with a broken crown waiting for him for everything's he's done. Air seems to fade from his lungs as he grabs onto the bag, pulling himself back into the reality of where he was treated like a saint, but felt like a sinner. The chill drab of District Six rings through his ears with the sounds of groaning from people too poor to live happily.

Children looking up and pointing at him like he was their idol walking among them. Instead, he ignores the stares that he gets from everyone. Home was waiting for him, especially since the Seventy Eighth were around the corner. Ring would be exhausted with the care that he receives in District Six. Plenty of people approaching him to ask if they can study the koala friend of his as a test subject to horrible things. Always the polite one, he declines their offers every time without question. People didn't understand what personal space was once you wear a crown upon your head. A sigh falls from his lips as he continues moving forward.

A ghost comes for him in an instant, a chill down his spine that sends him into worry. Eyes meet with a bench that carries the form of familiarity. All of his blood drained from his body as he stiffens at the sight of familiarity. Chest rising and falling like sleep was coming to the other male, or maybe not. Hands shaking as he moves forward with words trying to come from his lips. Fingers twitching as he almost reaches for the person who looked like Cub. An old friend who had disappeared in the years of forgetting what life before the accident was like. Lips pursed together until he finally lets his voice break the air.

"J-Jacob? I-Is that you?"

A flash of Cub being a brat towards his parents about Teddy coming home for dinner. A chuckle that left his lips like they would get away with it. Now he was there, staring at a form that was too pale, too fragile, and not the Cub that he knew him to be. Life changes, but he missed them. He misses Pan and Cub just as much as anyone else. Fingers gently touch his friend's shoulder gently, before retracting and stepping back a bit out of nerves. Their lives had taken different paths. Teddy, now a victor, Pan doing something and Cub was on a bench in the middle of the cold.

When did everything get so much more complicated.

Probably, when he vanished form the world to be called upon again in the limelight.

The ghost stands before him as everything shatters in an icy chill.

My father left a bruise on my ribs with his fists and a cigarette burn beneath my skin with his words. "Get the fuck out of my house," he told me, his fingers coiled against my throat and a drunken look in his eyes. I stared back bitter daggers and but spoke with a tone corrupted by fear. I nodded, stumbled with a stagger in my step and despair heavy on my chest -- and to think I'd told myself that I was the numb one.

Winter's kiss touches my skin and I'm clutching at straws while grappling with the end of my forbidden high. "Shit," I watch my breath disperse in the sky, like watching warmth be snatched by the heavens. My father touched a surface beneath my skin with cigarette burns with only the magic of his words; this hell in my head ain't ever gonna freeze over is it?

Of course, I spent the night high. Losing myself to something beyond the confines of human comprehension and praying the wrong man wouldn't find me and slit my throat. Although now, the prospect doesn't seem like such a grim one; between the touch of metal and the call of winter I think the option seems obvious.

Torn pages and slurred words, I saw a figure appear from the back of daylight. I was half-terrified it was who I thought it was and half-hoping it was. "Hey, you shouldn't be asleep here." It was a voice I didn't recognize, so I stared back with wide eyes and a groan. I spat venom because I preferred it to spitting blood.

"Bite me."

Shadow figure and mystery voice left me in peace, upon realizing he was yanking on the tail of a tiger. A weak and brittle tiger, but still a hunter if provoked to the right point. I don't need a pack to be dangerous.

Hah!

Thank fuck for Pan, else I probably wouldn't have gotten through the night without his morphling. I pierced my skin with a chemical I relied on but never cared to understand, I just wanted to lose myself to a high beyond the confines of human reasoning. What else would I have done? Remembered a better time before the call of winter? A time when I had clean hair, clear skin and a small mind. Before I'd known what it meant to lose a friend without so much as a goodbye and drift away from the other.

But it was always winter then, the howl was just quieter. But it was easier to deal with a whip-like slap across the cheek than a rock hard fist to the jaw.

Fuck me, it hurts to remember.

I pull my jacket over my body and curl into a tighter ball, sunlight kisses my skin and I can't help but shy away from its judgmental glare. Once, my heart quickened when sunlight broke through my curtains and the sky seemed blue. For it was an opportunity to escape the voices, the bottles; Teddy and Pan became my sanctuary from the touch of winter back home. Then, at six years old, I found myself chasing the prospect of sunlight. Tracing my fingers along the walls and searching crevices for the light, I was searching for Teddy Ursa's outline in every place I told myself to avoid for fear of monsters. But a lost boy couldn't be found, I was no longer anchored to warmth.

I lost my sanctuary for the cold and it took me nine years to find another. I found it with wide eyes and a desperate touch. I tell myself Teddy's dead, even though I saw him wearing a crown not long ago. I searched every crevice and outline for him when I was six, ventured places where I never dared go because I was afraid of monsters. I only found him because he was supposed to die. Rather than see him for one last time, I spent that night clutching needles and biting cigarettes because I was sure he wouldn't recognize me.

("Smoking's bad for your lungs, y'know,"

"And you're bad for my fucking eyes, don't see me complaining,")

I'm fine though; just injecting every inch of myself with a false shelter.

I'm not searching for the warmth anymore, perhaps that's why I groan at the feeling of sunlight against my skin and curl myself into a tighter ball behind my jacket. I just want to sleep--

and maybe wake up, depends on how I'm feeling

-- because it hurts so much to be awake right now.

I've shut my eyes for no longer than five minutes when a shadow looms and hides me from light's tendrils better than any jacket or sanctuary ever could. For a moment, I simply credit it as the clouds.

Until a voice sounds that I only recognized from the television screen.

"J-Jacob? I-Is that you?"

He was always doing that, stuttering when something was nervous. I remember making fun of him for it, fuck me, I was an asshole. Still am.

I turn, groaning and letting out a quick cough and I allow myself a weak smile. "Hey, Teddy," still using childish nicknames because I wish we lived in a better time. I recognize him, despite the beard and the darker curls on his hair. Despite the throne he sits on, I still see the rags beneath his riches. If I try hard enough, I can remember him with two legs and naive eyes.

"Damn."

Concern, fuck me, that's something I haven't heard in a while.

I smile, despite the throbbing in my temples, the throbbing in my torso and freezing my pulse. "Would've thought you'd be happier to see me," I look him up and down and nod towards his prosthetic. It was a peg leg, if I remember correctly. "I know 'pirates' used to be our favorite game, but fuck it, I'll admit that I can't pull the look off any better than you can."

I sit up, rubbing the edges of your temples and staring at the ground because it's easier then staring at ghosts I thought I that I'd lost. Twice.

"I'd offer you a cigarette but... I think someone stole my last one off me in the night."

I promise I'm fine; this is just like meeting an old friend.

Lurching under his own memories of kids with laughs that echoed in a deathly district. Coldness in their environment, warmth in their eyes. Things had been much more simpler back then where imagination drove the body with dreams of being something more than nurses, doctors, and druggies. Cub looks exactly how he remembers, but older, less baby fat and more masculine features. Cub's smaller than he expected him to be, but he retained those boyish features that Theodore had enjoyed to look at. Children with laughs that now are turned to frowns and dark eyes that don't speak the real issue of the matter. Cub's lips move as Teddy's heart beats with a sorrow that doesn't feel there. Hands dare to shake, but he's faced rougher things. At least, that's what he tells himself.

"Hey, Teddy,"

Then it's all curved lips and fake eyes as he watches his childhood friend look to him. Like a ghost lost in the world, Teddy can see it in his friend. Exhaustion, pain, and something else, but he's never been good at reading Pan or Cub. Mysteries to who they were now, but he didn't even know if they had been alive, but apparently they were. Alive and still breathing for now. Frozen in place, he can't hold his own breath for too long. A painful release of his lungs as he watches his friend there on a public bench in the middle of the district. Was his friend no longer in a home? Was Jacob living in the open where anyone could steal from him? Nothing to the boy's name that resided upon his body. Mind already goes to his first thought, but he doesn't dare move yet.

"Would've thought you'd be happier to see me," Happy. Happiness doesn't reside in his body that much anymore, not like the feeling of an impending crash that never comes. A smile gently pulls at his lips because if there's one thing he wants is to be seen as happy towards his old friend from years ago. The word okay plastered to his skin like a facade of what he wished people to see, but broken men aren't easy to hide. Eyes reach his missing leg that doesn't reside there like he used to have once long ago. A silence in his lips as he waits for Cub to speak first about it like it was the most normal thing in the world. "I know 'pirates' used to be our favorite game, but fuck it, I'll admit that I can't pull the look off any better than you can."

Hands rub at temples that ache with pain or frustration, he couldn't tell which of them were present in that moment. Bag of books dropped for a moment as Teddy gives a small frown to Cub with green eyes meeting a ghost of the past. Lips moving at the idea of what Cub had just said. Skin threatening to shake as he moves a hand to his shoulder with a small smile of concern that resides on his lips. "I-I am. Happy that is." A pause as he looks to the side and removes his hand from Jacob's shoulder. "Its just- It's just that this is not how I expected to find you..." The truth comes out in an icy chill that shatters the reality around the edge of their worlds.

Words come out in a friendly way, but his eyes don't watch, but they hide in the vision of right before. A lost soul, empty on a bench with nothing more than the icy chill in his skin and if Teddy hadn't been as caring, the boy would have suffered more. "I'd offer you a cigarette but... I think someone stole my last one off me in the night." Thing shave changed in bigger ways than he could have expected. Cigarettes, drugs, alcohol, and everything else were the norms for their district. Problems that were easily seen in just walking from place to place, even when Teddy was heading home from free work that he had done. A chuckle falls from his lips as the Cub he's known comes out only slightly in that phrase, but he shakes his head and puts on a frown still. Words dare to fall from his lips, but he holds back for a moment as he gives his childhood friend a good once over.

"Oh, I-I don't smoke." Teddy's fingers mess with the spot on his pants where the pocket almost is, nervous and unsure of what the new Jacob is like. There's a whisper of the old boy that he remembers somewhere in those smiles, but everything's different. There's something else that Teddy can't see, but he's trying to be strong, but strength was never something he had. Not even when he was putting his golden weapon through bodies and taking names that he would cry in his nightmares. "So..." Lips twitch in a nervousness as he speaks, eyes glancing at the skinnier form of his friend.

"You aren't going to sleep on that bench, right?"

Is it normal to want to just collapse in on his old friend? Is it normal to give hugs to sort of strangers, but friends all the same? He can't know now as he now shrugs off his jacket at the chill that he can notice in his friend's skin. Doesn't dare ask his friend for fear of rejection, but instead Teddy drapes it across his shoulders with a friendly unease smile. A ghost of a friend in front of him as he holds himself steady, until he moves next to Cub with his head in his hands and a sigh falling from his lips.

"Guessing that a lot of things have changed since we've last seen one another." Eyes close for a moment at the thought of having to explain what happened, but he doesn't dare try to, instead he just leans back and gives an actual genuine smile to his friend on the bench. "Wish we had seen one another sooner, but things happen for a reason I guess." A hand on his shoulder in that way that chill dudes do, or at least that's what he thought they did as he gives out a decent friendly laugh. A ghost of the past in his mind, but he's not sure of where they lie. Confusion is all he feels in this unknown territory. The world collapsing around him, but shrugging it off with a laugh and a possibility of something normal once more.

"C'mon, let's go buy you a cigarette?"

Like a moment of haunted eyes and strangled cries, he just shrugs it off for later.

When the nightmares come and his mind is broken.

That's where Jacob Choo will reside.

"If you w-want?"
