Elyra Breaks-Laws
It was getting warmer and warmer every day. The sun finally was shining brighter and the wind was becoming more gentle. Elyra couldn’t wait for summer. No more snow, no more cold, only flowers, stars and butterflies.
I will send butterfly messages to mama again then… I wish she could give me an answer one day...
She wanted to tell her mother everything that had happened in her life. Every little detail about that freezing day when she was found in the street and adopted. About her new family - brothers and sisters. About the reaping where the name they picked didn’t belong to anyone close to her. It meant she could live one more year without being afraid.
The girl was on her way home. Everything seemed perfect, but Elyra couldn’t help but feel unsure of what her future would bring. Summer was close. But would she live long enough to see it? This life was so good that it didn’t feel real. She couldn’t shake off all the doubts inside her mind. After years of street life it felt weird to feel happy. What if this all was about to end?
Elyra shook her head and smiled. Considering everything she had been through, it wouldn’t be too hard to live a few more wonderful weeks until the fantastic summer she was looking forward to. And it made no sense to think about the future when the amazing moment in the present was already here. The girl decided to make the most of her life and headed towards a beautiful hill on the outskirts of district twelve. Home could wait a little more.
It was her favorite place to go. Not many people could be found around there and it was like her very own safehouse. She sat down in the grass and closed her eyes.
Silence…
It was ringing in her ears, filling her whole body with peace and harmony. Time stopped as her heart slowed down, beating in unison with the sound of nature. Suddenly, Elyra felt something cold on her forehead. It was raining and she didn’t have an umbrella or anything at all to cover her head.
The girl rushed back towards the Laws family house, but it was too late. In a minute, all her clothes turned wet and gorgeous red hair was a pitiful sight. Elyra was still running as fast as she could, but she still had rather a long way to go. Suddenly her foot slipped on the dirty path and she fell down, landing in mud.
"Ouch!"
