I've always viewed honor as a very important thing in life. One of the main reasons I have not given up already after being reaped is because that would be a dishonorable thing to do, and my main goal in life is to make my family happy, protect them, and of course, bring honor to us all. I'm appreciative of my friends for not volunteering for me for the Hunger Games. No, I don't have a desire of any sort to fight and kill others, but I wouldn't want them to do it, either. Allowing someone I care for to possibly die in my place would be shameful and far from honorable.
I knew that if I didn't try my hardest, not only would my parents be deeply disappointed in me, their only daughter, but my friends would be crushed, too, especially if I died because of now making the best possible attempt I could to win. Strength was very important to me, too. I find it exceptionally important in desperate situations such as the Games, when only one person will come out on top. This wasn't just a competition I was preparing myself for, mentally and physically. It was a death match, and there was no backing out. That wasn't an option, even if I had wanted it to be one.
The training center smelled of rubber mats and sweaty tributes when I entered. I was a little late getting there, as I'd spent a bit extra time mentally preparing myself for finally interacting with the other tributes aside from just my District partner. I didn't care if I was late, however. I needed to be mentally and emotionally ready, and now I was. That meant that I could finally make my feet carry me to where I needed to be so I could become physically ready, as well.
I observed the other tributes as they trained, not quite sure where I would want to start myself. For some reason, my eyes were drawn particularly to the careers- a boy I recognized as being from District One looked exceptionally intimidating, as did the boy from Two. Due to their intimidation, I'm not quite sure what could have possibly prompted me to approach one of them, but I did. They both looked strong, but I'd chosen the boy from Two, and I was sure that he was perfectly capable of killing me within moments if he'd wanted to. He'd volunteered, after all. Surely that meant that he had some training under his belt.
When I'd approached him, I was cautious. It took me a moment to realize why I'd approached him, but it didn't take long for me to speak. When he stopped using his bow and arrows for a moment, I allowed the words to come out of my lips. I was holding myself confidently when I said what I wanted to say, too. I couldn't have a career thinking I was weak, even if it was the truth. Being from Eleven, however, I doubted he'd think I was a strong individual.
"Is bringing honor to your District and family a big thing for you?" I asked of him. I was genuinely curious, and hoped he wouldn't brush it off as something stupid or see it as rude, obnoxious or in any way irritating.
