Some days, I wish I were invincible, unable to be destroyed by anything that came my way. If I were, I'd be able to survive the Games without a doubt in my mind. Unfortunately, I'm far from bulletproof. There's no guarantee that I'd survive the Games, and I know for sure that I'll get hurt in there. Perhaps that's why I directed my attention to the first aid station that day.

I saw the boy from Six working over at the first aid station, however, and wasn't sure if I should approach him. People often made me nervous if I didn't know them very well, or if I didn't know them at all. I didn't know much of anything about this boy. For all I knew, he could stab me with one of the needles at the station and cause me to bleed just as a way of getting me to back off. That was one of the worst case scenarios, however, and I had to tell myself that nothing like that was going to end up happening. I had to assure myself that this boy would be kind and not have the immediate desire to murder me just because I decided to approach him.

When I finally convinced myself that it was okay to approach the boy from Six, I did just that. I grabbed a first aid kit from the table and went over next to him, opening it up and glancing at what he was doing. He certainly seemed to have some sort of clue as to what he was supposed to do with all the materials in the first aid kit. I decided to put on a friendly smile just then, and asked him where he got his experience.

"Do you have experience with first aid back home? You seem to really know what you're doing. It's impressive," I told him. Now, I just had to hope for the best possible outcome when it came to whatever his response would be.

What was the point in learning to fight if he was only going to die anyway?

Even being skilled in medicine, Zeke knew what the world was like. He watched the games, he saw what can happen. The wounds, the pain, and one of these foolish little first aid kits wasn't going to do anything for him. Except maybe sustain his life for just a tiny bit longer. It was nothing compared to the shelves back in six -

But this is the hunger games.

What did he expect? Something that would save everyone in the world?

He sighed drawing his legs closer to his chest. Sometimes life felt easy, but this was far from it, and even when he removed the bandages from inside, he knew his world was doomed. Yet he furrowed his brow and worked relentlessly trying to control the bleeding. Fake blood gushed from an abdominal wound in one of those fake dummies.

But before he could finish, the district eleven female interrupted him.

"Thanks." A sorrowful grin slowly spread from ear to ear the moment she asked if he had any medical background, yet it disappeared quickly after. "Yeah, I worked at a hospital back in district six." He sighed and lifted his gaze hoping to meet hers only this time words failed to fall from his lips as the question he asked Teddy slowly crept through his mind -

"Should I just go ahead and pretend that the tributes are just patients that I'm unable to save?"

Taking a deep breath, he stood from where he was seated and extended a hand covered with fake blood; "I'm Ezekiel." That was all the words he needed to say because in all reality it wasn't nice to meet her. Under different circumstance, yes, but right now he truthfully didn't want to grow to close to anyone.

Having friends only caused more pain in the end.

"Thanks." The boy told me. His smile didn't look genuine, though. He wasn't in the best state of mind, from what I could tell. I suppose I'm good at reading people, even if I wish I weren't sometimes. I often feel as if it would be better if there were some mystery left to it when it came to the feelings of the people I talked to. "Yeah, I worked at a hospital back in district six." A sigh emerged from the boy. There definitely wasn't satisfaction present when it came to meeting me. I suppose that's fair. At least one of the two of us would have to die, in the end of it all. Maybe he just didn't want to make friends to lost later.

The boy rose from where he was seated to extend his hand to me in greeting after a deep breath. At first, I froze, thinking that what was on his hand was real blood, before I realized that we weren't in the arena yet. This was all fake, like a simulation.

"I'm Ezekiel," he told me. I gave him a smile. Mine was genuine, even though I knew that his wasn't. That was okay, I suppose. I doubted anyone but the volunteers truly wanted to be in this situation right now, and, if I remember correctly, Ezekiel wasn't a volunteer.

"I'm Ping," I said in order to respond to his introduction with my own. "Do you mind if I watch what you're doing for a bit? You don't have to explain it if you don't want to. I'm just intrigued." I told him this, hoping that he'd allow me to watch as he worked with the first aid materials. It would help me in the arena, which was good for me, but perhaps not so helpful for him if he wanted me dead in the end. I'd completely understand if he told me that no, I couldn't observe his work. I still, however, hoped for the best.

Time stood still, yet in the blink of an eye the world changed. Sometimes he stood in the hospital helping those in need, but reality turned around showing him exactly where he was. This girl was a tribute, the enemy, and yet she wanted to learn from him. She wanted him to teach her about medical knowledge. Sure it may be beneficial to show someone else, but the point was clear. Both wouldn't live, and the more Zeke knew and the less she knew was the best possible situation.

"I'm Ping."

What kind of name was that?

But the thought vanished as she asked to watch what he was doing.

A genuine grin slowly replaced the one that he hid behind for so long. It was hard to give up on everyone here. To think about them as a dead patient he couldn't help was wrong, yet it continuously crawled through his mind. It would make it easier to just move on and pretend like they didn't deserve a chance. But everyone deserved a chance. Even those dying in the hospital beds right now.

"Well, Ping," His voice was as calm as a nonmoving body of water. Helping others was what he knew, and why not take that chance now? "I don't mind if you watch, but I would rather work with you on this. I'm very much a hands on learner, and actually showing you how to use the skills may work better for me."

Soon he sat back down beside the mannequin he was working on. Maybe she would join him, or maybe she wouldn't. It was on her now.

Grasping why this boy was being so kind to me was difficult, but I certainly wouldn't complain about it. His words were genuine, it seemed. I didn't sense lies pouring from his tongue like I had with so many other people I'd met in my life, both here and back in District Eleven.

"Well, Ping," He said to me with a calm tone. "I don't mind if you watch, but I would rather work with you on this. I'm very much a hands on learner, and actually showing you how to use the skills may work better for me." I was actually surprised as what he had told me. I'd asked if I could watch and he actually wanted to help me. Grateful for this, I nodded in response. He'd sat back down beside the mannequin he'd been practicing his work on before, and I sat down next to him.

"Thank you for your help. It's much appreciated." I told him this with a smile. I truly did appreciate what he was doing, helping me out like that. Besides, he wasn't obligated to help anyone at all, yet he'd decided that, just because I'd approached him and started talking to him, that he'd help me, of all people. This was an honorable thing for him to do, making me wonder if honor was an important thing to him, too. In this moment, it seemed like it may be.
