should've stayed, were there signs, I ignored?
can I help you, not to hurt, anymore?
we saw brilliance, when the world, was asleep
there are things that we can have, but can't keep
The world was a terrifying place. Monsters lurked behind every corner, and Zeke saw the effects first hand. Now it felt like he was being forced to become one of those people.
Everywhere he turned his eyes landed on different aged tributes. That was all they were, yet he struggled pushing that thought through his mind. Every person in the world deserved a chance, and now they were being placed in a situation where that just wasn't possible. If he ever wanted a chance at the life he deserved, he had to kill.
Even the younger tributes caught his eye, and a couple of them reminded him of Haley. Just the thought of that stopped him in his tracks. It haunted him. The thought of her ever being in a game, but now she didn't have to worry about it anymore since she died before her name was called. Soon Zeke would join his mother and sister leaving his father behind to the cruel world.
He sighed, lifting up a jar of paints from the camouflage station. Sometimes it offered an escape just to find a way to place himself in some sort of alternate reality if only for a few moments. For the first time since his name was called, a genuine smile spread from ear to ear. Painting was something saved for children, but right now it didn't matter how anyone saw him.
The brush skid across the blank sheet of paper leaving a trail of blue behind. Repeating the steps over and over, Zeke only stopped when the sky was finished. A few birds flew through the painted sky while others hid between a couple clouds. It was simply the start of a perfect world. A world without worries, without any monsters. A world laced with happiness and hope. But all of that was a figment of his imagination. A story he was told when growing up. A place where his mom and sister lived now.
The world he'll be joining real soon.
It was only the beginning of a masterpiece if that was what he could call it because he wasn't the most creative person in the world, but he loved to try.
