I left them behind, the odd pair I had met after the bloodbath. I couldn't stand the hungry look in the girl's eyes any longer. The soonest moment I had, I was gone. I managed to grab water from the creek and pack away my boon in short order, so I had no reason to stay. Now it was beginning to feel like I had left the whole world behind.
As the day turned into night I had curled up in a soft bit of grass, using my backpack as a pillow - though it wasn't all that comfortable. I managed to fall asleep relatively quickly but startled awake soon after, expecting my step-father to be looming up over me. Instead, all I saw was an empty creek shore. Once more reminding myself that I was free, I closed my eyes and tried to take advantage of this momentary peace.
The morning brought the urge to move. I rose early, as I usually did, and made my way toward the trees that had beckoned me before. Once inside of their shade I began to wake up. The slightest creaking or snapping sent me scrambling for my gifted axe. I wasn't exactly ready to face someone - or something - but perhaps I wouldn't be caught quite off guard.
The brief flash of light off of a reflective surface was my one warning. By the time I had pulled out my axe for probably the dozenth time, I was looking wildly around for what had caused it. Finally I spotted the creature ahead of me. The bird looked off somehow, but it took me some moments to realize what it was. The thing looked like it was made of glittering stone with the rays of sunlight that slipped through the leaves sparkling off of its wings and tail.
The moment it looked at me and screeched, though, I knew it was going to attack.
Raising my axe, I readied myself to swing. If I could strike it first, maybe it would leave me alone. And if it wasn't going to leave me alone then the faster I could kill it, the better.
