Carmen Stirling.
Training can be fun but only when you don't do it all day. You can't imagine how the career guys do it. It's been a few hours since you started and your whole body is covered with sweat and... maybe dirt from the floor.
Yikes. Or not yikes? (that is the question).
Normally, you would be a little disappointed by dusting the floor with your outfit and having salty streams running down your neck, but mostly because your sister is disgusted by dirt and everything that smells. You don't get it. All things in the world smell like something. Dirt smells like dirt, flowers smell like flowers, food smells like food (if it is not a fried rat - then it smells like burned fur). And sweat smells like sweat. Nothing in the world can exist without a smell but somehow Cathy thinks that it is bad for things to smell. She wants everything to be perfect - like on a TV screen that shows the luxuries of the Capitol.
But you, unlike her, think it makes no sense. And Cathy is not here right now. So instead of going to the shower, scrubbing off everything, including half of your skin and then complaining about the soap that "doesn't smell right", you are going to do something that is actually useful - eat.
You enter the dining hall, feeling all kinds of smells that hit your nose and wondering whether Cathy would faint if she saw all this.
Stop thinking about Cathy.
When you got on that train, you promised to yourself to not think of her until you go home. Those thoughts are nothing but torture to your heart and yet you keep thinking about what Cathy would think if she saw what you are seeing. Although instead of observing the capitol she would probably be crying until someone pushed her into the arena and that would be the end of Cathy's story.
Stop thinking about Cathy. Think about food.
This is easy. You have never seen, let alone tried all kinds of food that surround you. And you have no idea where to start, so you pour yourself a glass of water and grab a piece of meat in your sweaty little hand (who needs those shiny plates, right? They belong in a museum). Eating while standing is not exactly comfortable, so you sit down at the table nearest to you in front of some girl and start chewing on your food... very loudly.
"Slurp. Slurp. Slurp."
You want to say hi to the girl... But you can't because your mouth is currently full of chicken and you are afraid that it might fall out while you speak.
