The trees turned and the District became quiet; Garnet liked to listen.
She heard birds leaving til the spring and the wind sighing a soft I'll miss you to them. She heard the soft crunch of leaves beneath passersby, laughing and enjoying the mild weather. She heard the sounds of life itself, despite the waning presence of the sleepy oncoming winter.
The world doesn't fear the reaper. It lives. Year after year, tale as old as time; it remains. Garnet told it goodnight with a look over her shoulder, and waited to see it again. To listen.
The slippers in her bag had not been used in a while. Long enough for her to worry they wouldn't feel the same when she put them on. Before, wrapping that pink silk around her legs was empowering: a warrior putting on her armor before a battle. Now, she knew she would not be as limber, that she'd fall out of spins and that her toes would ache when she pulled herself up on them. Six months of missing classes, of sitting at home and wishing someone— anyone would come knocking at her door. She waited; she listened. She only heard the silence.
It was only recently that she had decided to get her life back on track, to break free of the darkness that had surrounded her and become the person she had once loved to be. To save herself the embarrassment of catching up, she waited until dark.
Except someone was still there, and there was no way of avoiding her. Blonde hair and a biting smile; they weren't exactly friends but Garnet knew who she was. One moment, she considered running away and the next, she was taking a step toward the girl.
"Sophie! You've gotten taller since I saw you last!"
She chuckled, her slippers heavy in her hands, "I haven't grown at all, lucky."
