As thoughts remained in a never-ending spiral within my mind, the adventures of my imagination were running wild, and I let them. I thought of many things, jumping from one to the next.

The first was home. My home was District Eight. I'd lived there my whole life, of course, as I didn't exactly have an option to live elsewhere, had I even wanted to. I personally don't think I would have wanted to live elsewhere, even with the Capitol as an option, though, as I was content with what I had, albeit so little. My family was far from wealthy. One may even have considered us poor. Perhaps I could win the Games and bring home the astonishing sum of money that they give to the lone, surviving victor, getting my family out of the painful state of poverty that we've always been in.

I remember, yesterday, which was my first day in the arena, someone had sent me, in sponsorship, a photo of District Eight, and I'd, in turn, sent that photograph to Sable Delamore, my District partner. I suppose that, aside from the bracelet that Jory had given to me in the Justice Building, she was really all that I had from home, here in this arena, and I barely even knew her. I really was in a strange place. I knew nothing while I was trapped within this place, no matter how much I may like to think that there was at least something I had a little bit of knowledge of.

That was when my mind jumped for the first time, now taking more notice of what was actually around me. The forest I was sitting on the floor of was made mostly of the wood of petrified trees. It was like stone, or perhaps more similar to bones or fossils. Regardless, it just wasn't quite right. It didn't seem like something that should exist. Maybe it was something that existed somewhere in the world, but I'd never seen it before. Actually, come to think of it, I'd never even heard of it. It could be something that the Gamemakers just made up, but honestly, I wasn't sure that I should give them that much credit in the department of creativity. At least, not these Gamemakers. It wasn't like the avox one (whose name I couldn't even recall) could express his ideas very easily, and Glamour Kinkaide seemed like he was far too stunningly hot, like damn focused on his looks to have time to think about details like this forest.

My thoughts were interrupted in an instant, however, by the sound of a cannon, and Faux's had already sounded, meaning this was a new one.

BOOM!

Oh Ripred, please tell me that's not Fiona or Carmen. If it is, that's my fault, too. I left them. I abandoned them when there were still other tributes in the area, and now, they might be dead. Oh Ripred, oh Ripred... Please, please, please let them be okay.

Sitting there in those lonely woods of lonely, dead, and petrified trees, I started to think. I had been so worried about the potential of Carmen or Fiona's untimely and unfair deaths being the cause of that cannon sound I'd heard not all that long ago. Perhaps I could put my mind at ease by sending them an apology. I'd caught one of those birds known as 'Delivery Words' the day before and sent something to Sable Delamore, my District Partner. Maybe now, sending something to Fiona or Carmen would make me feel a bit better. In the case that neither of them was the cause of the cannon going off in a startling boom, perhaps sending them an apology would help them know that I still cared, and that I felt bad about what happened to Faux in that fight that I'd started.

I'd started that fight, and I never should have.

Regardless, if I wanted to send a note to Fiona or Carmen, or perhaps even one to each of them, I had to catch one of those pesky birds that seemed to like to be rather evasive. Starting in my attempts before it got dark was probably the best idea, so that's just what I did.

"C'mon, ya birds. Oliver needs you."

Once I caught the bird known as a Delivery Word, I had a smile plastered onto my pale face. I was a scrawny little boy from Eight, but apparently, trying to bribe a bird to let my capture it and use it as a postal slave be my new little friend had turned out successfully in my favor. I caught the bird, and I spoke to it. I had to sound crazy, but no one was around to hear it. At least, I hoped that that happened to be the case, anyway.

"Hey there, friend." I laughed a little bit. I knew I would have sounded insane to anyone watching, but I didn't care. It wasn't likely that anyone actually got through their time in this arena without going a little bonkers. "I said I would name you, so I'll do just that. How does the name Gregory sound?" I asked of the bird.

Surprisingly, it answered me with a joyful-sounding "HONK!" that actually took me off guard, startling me the slightest bit.

"Haha, alright, Gregory. I'll write up a letter for you, now. Then I'll try to catch a friend for you," I told it.

So, I did just that. I used another sheet of paper from my notepad, along with my blank ink pen that had been sponsored to me, and hastily scribbled a note to one of my old friends. I did this quickly because, after the slight ruckus I'd likely caused speaking to and trying to catch Gregory the Delivery Word, someone could have heard me at this point, and I truly wasn't in any sort of mood to fight right then.

Then, I thought of something else that I needed to send to someone. I needed to send another note, which meant that I needed another Delivery Word. It was time to give it another shot at catching one.
