Long after the screeching stopped, it still echoes uncomfortably in Wander's head.1-4
Not that the Vineyard fell silent when the mutts did; a dry intermittent breeze rustles the leaves, the same honking birds that floated over the coast dot the skies here, and the four of them make their own noise, rattling around and talking when they feel up to it. It's quieter than the suites at the Capitol, though, devoid of traffic and chatter and footsteps, and a further cry still from the bustle of District Four—quiet enough that at home, ve would know someone was up to something. Quiet enough that ve can't help listing names two by two, or expecting cannon fire every time the air changes.
Moving hurts, but it soothes the jumpiness. Wander breaks thorns off rainbow roses until Bette offers her knife and the rest of them fly by, then fusses with the camera until ve decides to save the remaining pictures after all. (After everything that's happened, ve can't quite bring verself to throw away the shot from this morning, but ve doesn't feel the need for more. This place will sit behind vis eyelids for as long as squeals bounce between vis ears. Who knows how many photos the thing holds, anyway?) Somewhere around unraveling vis fishing line and getting two rows into what promises to be the tiniest net ve's ever seen, though, ve decide that sitting down isn't cutting it anymore and wraps the fishing line back around the sushi as quickly as ve can.
That accomplished, as much to keep the increasingly battered-looking plastic container closed as to give the fishing line a place to stay, Wander sprawls into the dirt for a few seconds before sitting up with a groan that's barely a breath. "I need to pace," ve says with a glance to the others as ve rolls to vis blessedly uncomplaining feet, grabbing a javelin in vis uninjured hand on the way up. "I won't go out of sight."
Temple stands as well. "I'll come too."
"Cool." Wander offers a brighter grin than the facsimile ve pulled together when Temple handed over her needle, stammering and not quite making eye contact. Nothing feels much better now, after rest and stitches, but it does feel a little better, and armed or not Wander would rather poke around the Vineyard with her than without her.
One of the honking birds zips out of the vines with a grape in its mouth. Face to face with one, Wander finally realizes why the honks have sounded familiar: they're Delivery Words, crowd or at least Gamemaker favorites. Some announcers like to coo over them; more importantly, they're useful.
Wander considers the bird for half a second as it lands in the middle of the row to chomp its prize. Ve still isn't ready to blow through those Polaroid photos, but ve has other options.
Why not.
Gently, trying not to startle the bird before ve's ready, Wander leans vis spear against a trellis and murmurs to Temple, "I'm gonna try to get that." Then ve pounces.
[Wander does first aid actions from maint (f/a, n/t, bandages from Bette) for a total of -9 damage, gathers some roses, and tries to catch a Delivery Word]
