The presence of another, making the sure thought of this all being an illusion ever so stronger. I carried the idea of there being two victors with this quell. Angel and I, the conquerors of the arena walking out with our shared crown. Instead we are to be ushered out of the back door of the morgue, no spotlight and no promise of a house in the victor’s village.

Revival may seem a gift to the Capitol, but a flat line would have been so much easier.

To be in Angel’s arms again for just a few days and then the fences and vast lands between the Districts will again separate us again. How are we going to make it work?

Warmth radiates from my cheeks, a tap of emotions to smack away the festering thoughts of what is to come. Look at what is in the present. My first taste of a yearning touch from my companion in this hell’s escapade of my life.

My arms collect around Angel’s torso, squeezing him into my own chest. No medicines in that surgical corner can give the same effect that I am feeling right now. Maybe seconds clock by as I refuse to let go of him. I don’t search out the cameras, but I know for sure all their eyes will be on us. A little romantic piece of their horror story.

I inhale, finally plucking up the courage to let go but my arms barely slip from him. Instead I step back a little, taking in the full sight of the boy that just a few hours ago had a knife plunged into his eye. ”Annie got you good, how reckless of you.” My throat rattles with each word, as if my lungs are quacking with every drip of energy it takes to spill the syllables. It is agony just to talk with this altered gravelly voice gifted to me by Annie’s district partner. But there is so much to say to Angel, so many events to catch up on and all the words I was unable to reveal in that arena still festering inside of my head.

Slowly I let my arms slip from him before sitting on the edge of the nearest bed. ”Come on sit down.” My newly geriatric body calls for rest, even after today’s nap. All these quakes in my body, the prancing pain up my back and pulsating tenderness in my stomach, it all something that I am not used to. ”How are you feeling? This is a fucking surprise isn’t it?”

Another life awaits outside this prison. Discharged into another existence, unpicked by my own hand. I talk of my father succumbing to his wickedness in the short days that I have been gone but he will be there with the six-foot deep hole ready waiting besides him. Never has there ever been affection between us. We are just roommates.

I am just his burden. Like I am to so many others.

Now Teddy Ursa bares the weight of my existence. Oh, how I beg to see the tears, if there even was any when Wander drew that spear through my neck. Then the reveal, oh fuck it will mess with him so much. I hope his heart is twisted as much as he did mine those many years ago. A forgotten friend awoken from the dead. My loyalties will not play with him, I’ll have no key to that victor’s village, I shall be thrown back out into the gutter.

My loyalties are held between my fingers, a boy from a far away land. How far can a heart be stretched?

“And a nearly intact boyfriend.” Here lies affection in an unlikely land. Claimed by another who has just stepped out of his own grave. All these feelings for him have come to this, if only we had a private eye and not all these many others to share our time together.

Really Parson?

A rush of blood to every end of my body, a heart ready to implode and cheeks warmer than any fiery blade juggled in the arena. These are unlikely times to have feelings like this. Unidentifiable emotions so foreign to me that I want to flee, away from the boy who has triggered them. Danger was my shadow through the arena and yet the fright I carry now does not compare.

“That's what we are, right? Boyfriends?”

There it is. The question to confirm whatever binds us and still no answer spills quick enough. These feelings must be named but a part of me does not want it to be revealed. So many constraints between us, a commitment I have never penned into my life before.

”I don’t know.” Flustered words carried by a croaky voice, that is not how i should answer it. ”I mean yeah but like, how can we make this work? There is a big fucking fence between us back home.” I inhale after the speech, my lungs barely carrying the energy. My shortness of breath is clear, and I just cough, catching it with my free hand. ”I guess we can make it work.” I say back home but whatever is waiting for me is just as much as a mystery of how to make this work between Angel and I.
