How does one realize that they have gone too far?
That is what she is asking herself right now.
The spear in her thigh hurt, and while Annie was sure that her reflexes would not stop her from performing at her best.
But she did not expect her aim to be perfect.
She knew what the capitol was asking of them. The moment she realized she woke that morning and realized that Angel had not left.
She expected for him to be half way around the arena, fighting Lex or Denali, people that he wanted to kill.
And she expected to be fighting Bette, or Temple, the two people that she wanted to kill.
Nothing readied the blonde for the realization that the gamemakers had something completely different in mind.
And as they traveled, Annie wondered if there was anything she could do to expedite this process, to get Angel as far away from her as she could, because she did not want to have to cross hairs with the one person in the arena that meant the world to her.
But time passed, and nothing changed.
And when night came, Annie held her knife close as she ignored the anthem, instead keeping her eye on Angel.
The numbers were so low, and with as much loss as the both had been through over the last couple of days, Annie realized that it was the perfect time for the Game Makers to send a message to the peons of Panem.
The capitol did not care about anything but a show, and that’s what this was going to turn into.
And so you thought that this was a joke at first,
The moment that he opened his lips and turned back to her of course,
They would not have to fight each other?
No?
How cruel would that be.
But as they advanced in the tide pools, the water became violent, unrelenting stream after stream before them until it became a reality.
The worst possibly realization that Annie could have come too while she was here.
But Angel did not miss a beat.
And his spear was quick to cut into her knee, something that she didn’t expect.
The sad part about it is? Annie picked up on his rhythm with a snap of her fingers, her knife already out of the holster.
She gritted her teeth in pain, but that did not stop her from unleashing a fury onto the boy that reminded her so much of the Angel she had back home.
A rage was unleashed that could not even be quantified, because as much as she loved Angel, she felt betrayed.
And if the Capitol wanted a fight, then a fight was what they were going to get.
But it didn’t last long.
Her aim did not disappoint.
It never did.
She watched as the red color hilt protruded from the Angel’s eye.
It took a couple seconds to realize that Angel de Costa had left the world that they knew.
”Angel?” She said, muted because she wasn’t sure if anyone else was around them.
But after another moment, his limpness becoming growingly concerning, ”ANGEL!” she screamed.
A raw sound that had never come out of her before.
Something billowed at the bottom of her stomach and resonated in her lungs.
A treacherous lurch slipped out of her mouth as she realized what she had done.
”No…” she muttered to herself, ”Not you…” a silent tone continued to occupy a space where she had previously just screamed.
It took her moments to realize that she needed to be by his side.
And when she finally rushed to do so, her eyes burned with a rage that she hadn’t expressed before.
Because it was the rage that she pent up inside since the day she got here.
Her father was an awful man, and right now, her rage burned as brightly as it would if he were in the room.
She now had become a monster.
Just like her father.
And she bit her lip, hard.
So hard that she could taste the blood that was running out of Angel’s skull.
But instead of wiping it away, she grabbed Angel’s hand held it to her mouth.
She kissed it softly, her tears running down her face like streams that ran infinitely through the hell she was in.
River Styx had nothing on the damage she felt, ending the life of someone that she cared about.
Her last life line.
Throw into the darkness to never resurface.
And after what seemed like hours of whispering “I’m sorry” and “Please forgive me”’s she realized that she would never receive that from him.
He was no longer here to animate the body that was growing increasingly cold in front of her.
And so she started to wipe the tears from eyes, trying to discard the melancholy and reintroduce hope.
But she knew better.
She needed more time.
But that was not on her side.
It never would be.
And so she looked up into the horizon, the stretch of the tide pools reaching far and wide, and simply took a deep breath.
She was the last one left of her alliance, an outcome that she hated to predict.
But the thought did cross her mind with each passing day.
That’s when she realized that this death could not be in vein.
This death, one by her own hands needed to mean something.
”Ill carry you Angel.” She whispered into the wind, her hand still holding his firmly.
”And Hellion, and Parson.” she caressed his cheek softly.
”Ill make it out or die trying.” she affirmed her words with a nod to a ghost that she knew that she couldn’t see.
And she let the smell of the water wash over them as she took her time to grieve.
”Now go home my friend. Tell Parson and Hellion that I might I’ll see them soon."
She whispered as she finally pulled the knife out of his eye, signifying the loss of yet another Angel..
