Carmen Stirling.
You watch the fight with masochistic persistence. Despite the lump in your throat that makes it impossible to breathe. Despite the liquid welling up in your eyes. It hurts as if your own eye was pierced, as if someone burned multiple holes in your body...
He's a CHILD! What are they doing?
Taking out the weak ones? That is so unfair. Sadly, Shy can't get himself together and avenge himself. You know they will probably take him out of there while he is still alive, but what if they won't get there in time? What if... You scream as another hit lands on his body and he falls, then cover your mouth with your hand quickly. You are just going to wait. Screaming is stupid, crying is stupid. You did both things and it got you nowhere.
You stand up from the floor where you've been sitting. Wobbly legs carry you to the bathroom where you lock the door and bang your head against the wall repeatedly.
Stupid kid!
He should have hidden like you told him... Maybe he tried... Why did you even think he was capable of going on without you? He is not a child, though. Not any more of a child than you. Maybe younger than those who butchered him - or tried to anyway, but not much younger than you. You are not mad at him because he is little or stupid, you are angry with yourself for leaving him out there alone.
You don't know how much time has passed when you finally stumble out of the bathroom and back to the medical ward. He should be here. Alive. He can't die.
Please be alive... Be alive...
One quick glance inside is enough to know that your wish has been granted. The idiotically frightening surgeon in white is leaning over a painfully familiar body, reciting the same balderdash about crop rates (maybe it was something else, not crop rates but that's not the point). Your feet take a sprint forward and your fragile arms wrap around the beaten up frame of your ally and friend.
"You are alive! You are alive! What did they do to you?! Those idiots! Does it hurt?"
You promised to be there for him. Forever. And you weren't.
"I am sorry..."
Salt and water are dripping from your eyelashes in a bitter mix. That nasty nurse is probably not liking the tearful reunion. But you'd take all the morphling in the world just for this one moment, for the hint of a cuddle which you thought you could never hope for again.
