Pike



The pencil grinds down as Pike frantically sketches the last of his pictograms into his worn leather book, the sun fading behind the branches with each passing minute. He wants to appreciate the sunset, but he needs to get these words out before he breaks, his voice bearing the shame of incompetence of never being able to carry his words correctly. His pictures are scattered across the pages of his old leather book, his thoughts and feeling safe in a cipher that only he knows. He prefers it that way; no one has to know what he feels, no one has to understand what he harbors inside that is tearing at his seams to break free. He wishes for the outlet he needs to break free from his thoughts and allow him to live the life Pike wants, yet is stuck in the routine that he knows will never end. Just a gear in the machine that he wishes would explode and crumble around him. He feels powerless against the ever-present forces of the Capitol, knowing that there is nothing that he can do to take them down. The hatred lives deep down in his core, so much so that it has become his driving force.

Pike climbs down the tree as the sun falls lower and lower into the horizon, hoping to find an outlet to release in anger with. Passion and hatred have always had a fine line and more and more lately he’s seeing himself crossing that line, letting his emotions take control. When he was younger, he was able to detach himself from these issues, ensuring that they remained only political. Now though he’s finding himself lost in these issues, finding himself farther and farther away from the man he once used to be. Pike hates himself because of this and only wants to be the person whom he once was. He goes deeper into the forest, looking the area that was ravaged by disease, where the trees still refuse to grow. It helps Pike to calm down cutting down the dead wood from the grove, hopefully when it clears out the land can rise again, stronger than before.

The anger flourishes through his body as he strikes down his ax, the sound of splitting wood vibrates through him and echoes throughout the forest. This kind of physical activity helps him channel and release his anger; it is not always the best coping technique, however. When he can't escape, the anger eats away at his sanity, slowly but surely pushing him past the breaking point. That's why he traverses out here as the sun dies into the horizon. No one ever bothers him; he is truly and utterly alone. At least he thought so.

Pike hears the snapping of twigs beneath heavy footed steps, clear indication that this person has no care about keeping their presence a secret. Pike sees this a Peacekeeper coming on a warpath, and that never ends well for the people in the way. Concerned and panicked, he finds his way into the hollow of a dead tree, hoping that the Peacekeeper wouldn't think to look in a tree. He tries to silence his breaths, hoping that the intruder wouldn't hear him. The snapping and thumping grow louder as the sounds carry the person closer and closer, yet it is not a fast rhythm, but a leisurely one, slow paced, and carefree. He peeks his head slowly from behind the hollow, trying to see who it is. If it is actually a Peacekeeper, he would prefer to remain hidden as much as possible, but that is not who he sees. He sees a young man with messy brown locks and a slim, yet muscular body.

How did this young man get all the way out here? Pike wonders to himself as he cautiously edges his way from out of the tree. He is still not sure if this young man could be a distraction, but he has faith enough to trust the kid, for now. He slowly walks over the young man and inquires with no introduction,

"How did you get all the way out here?"
