I peak out from behind Bennett and clench my fingers around his wrist. He's only twelve, but he's already much taller than me already. I never went through the phase where I surpassed him in height.
The doorway gapes wide above our heads, two men dressed in white uniforms cast a shadow into the hallway.
"We're sorry for your loss."
They lie through their teeth as if they're having casually saying hello to us.
My lips peel back and I spit to the side.

Six years later and we're living with our grandparents, the memory still fresh in my mind. I have a cramped room to myself, tucked in the corner. Jars on the shelves are full of various herbs, flowers, and stones. The one next to my bed has some kind of salamander crawling up the side. Mum used to tell me it'd keep the nightmares away if I had one.
Everyone else called her a witch.
I can hear someone shuffling through the yard outside, and I automatically ball my hands into fists. It's the kids from the community home, I know it already.
I reach for the dusty window, pulling it open with a creak, and immediately spot a pair of them kicking at my circle of pebbles surrounding the house.
"Hey!"
At first they don't respond. I grab a handful of gravel from one of my jars and chuck it in their direction. "Hey, you! Don't touch my damn stones!"
They turn tail and run, shouting something about the Devereux witches. They mean my Mum and I.
Well, I guess just me now, since she's dead.
