Carmen Stirling.

You enter the dining room with a haunted expression on your face because you know that oh so many people there will want to crush you. Maybe not, but you never know for sure. The girl from three sounded too real when she cursed you. And she doesn't seem to be the forgiving type. Even when you all know no harm was done she may not be happy to see you. You lean on the wall by the entrance, unsure whether you should enter.

Your grumbling stomach reminds you of its presence loudly, not leaving you much of a choice. You haven't eaten since that morning with Shy. And you have no idea how many time you spent unconscious. You need your food unless you want to faint right here. And you'd rather face your fears sane and full of food than pass out on the floor.

You make your way to the food, savoring the taste of imaginary bread in your mouth. You only see food, ignoring everything else, because you want to have at least one moment of peace. And when your shaky hand grabs a doughnut, you spot a figure right beside you. Maybe if you run away, you can still escape unnoticed. But that is not likely. A shiver runs down your spine as if you've seen a ghost as you mumble:

"I'm sorry... For... You know..."

Balancing a plate with one hand doesn't get easier, at least not in the first forty-eight hours. Wander wrinkles vis nose from time to time as ve scoots down the line, putting down the plate to pile on richly-colored brownies and spiced cookies and soft deserts ve doesn't recognize—whatever looks good, sugar on an empty stomach be damned, or whatever ve thinks Eve might like brought back to her—before moving a few feet down to do it all again. Cramming everything together takes so much focus, and the pulsing music takes over the air so completely, that ve doesn't notice Carmen until ve almost runs her over and has to plunk vis plate back down on the desert table for fear of dropping it.

Carmen herself looks just as startled. Wander hasn't seen her since she ran out of the medical center—ve wants to talk, but she should have her time with Fiona and Quest before anything else—and something in ver aches at seeing her lively spirit tamped down to a skittish mumble of "I'm sorry... For... You know..."

They're friends, after all, despite everything. If she was still willing to say that after Wander killed Fiona, it hardly seems fair to revoke it for killing Wander verself, either.

"It's..." Okay won't quite come out, but Wander shrugs with vis right shoulder and offers her a smile, melancholy but genuine. "I basically told you to, right? And even before I knew about—" ve waves vis right hand between the two of them and then in a vague circle around the room— "I was glad you still had a chance. Seriously."

You wrinkle your forehead and a tear drops into the food plate. You are feeling miserable. You don't want to do this. You want to run away, as far away as possible. You want to sink into this floor. Sink and reappear in your district with your sister's loving arms around you. You want to hug your grandma and cry on her shoulder and tell her that no, you're not crying, you're laughing about that story you just remembered. She wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway.

When you hear Wander's comforting voice, it is even worse. Wander is not mad. Not angry. Just forgiving. ANd you know you don't deserve forgiveness. So you put your plate aside, wrap your friend in a hug and let more tears drop.

"But I didn't want to. And I shouldn't have. Even if you told me to. It was wrong. I am horrible. I am an awful friend."

YOu sob and sob and sob until you can't hear your own voice anymore.

Wander wraps vis right arm around Carmen almost before ve registers that the force pushing ver one step back, bumping vis wounded hip against the table, is a bundle of sobbing friend. After so much of vis life that ve can't remember the other side, muscle memory guides ver more surely than thought. This isn't a bad grade or a skinned knee, but it's easy to pillow the side of vis head against the top of Carmen's and sweep a gentle hand across her back, making tiny, meaningless noises as she sobs, "But I didn't want to. And I shouldn't have," on and on in that vein until the tears overtake her voice.

It's a strange position, comforting one of vis own would-be killers. But the last thing Wander wants right now is more fighting, and with Carmen bony and shaking in vis arms, ve can't bring verself to mind as much as ve could. "We all made it, okay?" ve says, as softly as ve can without being drowned out. "We made it." Ve shifts to rest vis forehead against her crown, eyes closed, smiling faintly at the brush of her hair on vis face. "You're not worse than anyone else. A horrible friend wouldn't go that far to help Shy." Wander all but watched that disaster of a scene through vis hands, and ve can't even imagine how Fiona or Carmen's sister back in Eleven felt, but it came from a good heart. Everything about her, mischief and reckless ideas and all, seems to come from a good heart.
