The train ride to three seemed shorter than what it really was. Then again the distance between the two districts were not as staggering as people made it sound.
She looked out the window and tried to think about the world for what it was worth, but nothing would ever be the same for Annie now that she was a victor. Her team made sure to remind her of that with every district she went too. She could not do anything without their supervision, no matter how much Annie preached that she would be fine by herself. They weren’t willing to let her out of their sight, and Annie would simply roll her eyes every chance she got.
The speech went a little better than she expected, and maybe that was because this was her third one and she had some help from Leon to make sure she said what she was feeling.
The tributes from three were some of Annie’s least favorites, the girl being the one to steal her hand from her. If she didn’t have self control, she probably would have attacked her outright in anger, but this was not the place to exact revenge. She was a distant memory at this point to her, and she was starting to get used to the hand that had been given to her by the capitol.
Bad blood was still there, but she had to let it go in that moment, because this was not about her, this was about them.
The fact that they got their lives back.
The fact that they get to live full lives and try to make sense of whatever they are looking for.
Because the certainly didn’t find it in the arena.
And Annie could never visit district three again as long as she lived, and she would be alright with that.
One less thing for her to think about.
Next came the exhibition, in which they wanted to see what Annie could do with some of the mechanical tools they had worked hard to create just for the occasion. Annie sighed, pushing them away from her and simply asked for a regular pair of throwing knives. However they didn’t oblige completely, handing her a set of cold knives that felt heavier then her usual knives.
She looked at the targets they had set up for her and she narrowed her eyes on the target.
She let the knives fly out of hands, watching as they zoomed away from the trajectory that she had set and watched them land in critical parts of each of the dummies. She knew that they were military grade, but she didn’t expect them to be so automatic. She sighed, realizing that times were changing, and there was a very high chance that these would become the norm if the technology was sent to the capitol.
She put the rest of them down and walked out of the exhibition, making sure the peacekeepers were behind her while she made her exit. She had other things to do today that were just more important.
She didn’t need to prove herself to anyone anymore.
Next was a luncheon with the current victors of three, which Annie tried to not think about too much because it had been a long time since anyone had come even close to winning it from three. The 79th was an outlier, but other than that, the district hadn’t really had a super strong showing in recent games. Annie always watched the games closely, not because she had a choice, but because her father wanted her to recognize patterns.
And sadly, watching the games had prepared her for pretty much anything that could happen. But she would sooner slit her throat then thank her father for preparing her for the hell she endured.
That much as certain.
She looked at the victors from three, who sat across from her at a smaller table then she was used too. It didn’t surprise her too much seeing as districts like 1 had a good amount of victors to their name. 3 and 2 had the same amount of living victors, which made Annie feel a bit uncomfortable, because 4 was in the same boat as them, however, she couldn’t think about that too much.
She was not here to talk about the merits of the games after all.
”Does this ever get easier?” Annie said to the man that sat across from her, ”Atticus was it?” Annie spoke clearly as she placed her fork and knife at the side of the plate. She didn’t have too much of an appetite to begin with, she was too curious to eat after all.
”What was it like for you in your games?” Annie said, desperately at this point. She wanted all of this to go away, but she knew better. She knew that it would never go away.
Because now she was the capitol’s property. So the best she could do was ask questions and listen to the answers.
