Gin Prank
When Gin steps onto the stage, she is relieved that she learned all the right words because her mouth is starting to fall into a nervous vacuum.
"Good afternoon, everybody."
The woman takes a deep breath and smiles.
Her support group is there - a bunch of children crowded awkwardly by the stage, Lane holding a banner with "MAMA PRANK ROCKS" and a family picture scribbled around the letters.
"Firstly, I would like to thank you all for coming."
She wrote this speech, yes. She knows it by heart. But it doesn't seem familiar to her anymore. Because when she sees all these people in front of her, she doesn't want to read her notes like a puppet.
"You standing here shows that you are not indifferent to this district's future. We have this in common."
Her heart can't stand performing. It only knows how to talk. And she starts talking, letting the words flow.
"That was the reason that drove me to participate in the election. Seeing me as one of the candidates might come as a surprise to you - I do not really fit in into the image of a politician. But do we really need a politician to turn things around? For my whole life I have been managing a family - and a huge one, I dare say. And in the Prank house one more child has never been a problem, it has been a joy. Not only was it heartwarming for me to welcome another member to the family but it was also a joy for my children to acquire a new sibling. If you come to think of it, welcoming someone to your family is accepting them as one of your own blood. And maybe this is what is really required of a mayor - to care as deeply about each citizen as if they were their extended family. Right now, I cannot say I'll magically change your lives in an instant - that would be an empty promise and a foolish one. But there is one promise I can definitely make - whoever you are, you will not be ignored and I will help you to the best of my abilities. To be more specific, I will organize regular meetings where you can share your concerns about the problems we have and offer solutions you have in mind. I want to make sure each and every one of you will have the chance to speak up and this looks like the best way to manage it. Apart from that, I think there are problems we all know our district has. Crime rates that seem to never decrease, poverty, frequent accidents at work. And I will work on that. It would be foolish to think that the funding of our district might ever increase - I believe it is not likely to happen. But I have gotten the hang of managing a small budget and not a single person in our family can say that they're starving. I really know how to save money where it's needed less and I am going to find a way around our difficulties to organize financial help for those in severe need. That should also make the crime rates drop because a lot of crimes happen because of desperation and no other way to earn a living. And I am also going to see about how we can increase a number of breaks during the day for people working life-threatening jobs, because if they're less tired we could avoid a certain number of accidents."
That's it, that is all she has to offer and what she's willing to give to these tired figures and smiling faces of her neighbours and possibly the newest addition to her family.
"Frankly speaking... That's all I've gotta tell you today."
Not too official but the beautiful clever phrase she wrote kind of slipped her mind, as well as the rest of the speech.
"Like I already said, we are a family and I am ready to stand by you through everything life throws at us."
Mommy, you're beautiful! - Lane mouths and she smiles once again.
"My family by blood is stuck with me anyways, but you have a choice. And the choice is yours."
She pauses for a second and looks over the crowd confidently.
"Whatever the result of this election, I am grateful for having this opportunity to talk to you."
Another smile, brighter than the others.
"Now the only question left is - do you think I could pull this off? If you do, you know how to help me make this happen. Vote."
She blushes under the eyes of the crowd that suddenly seems huge.
"Thank you."
And the candidate slips from the stage with a huge smile on her face right into the embrace of an enormous man in his best suit.
"How did I do? Was it all right?" - the woman whispers and he barks for everyone to hear a thunderous "You're the mayor of my heart, Gingle!" while a few smaller kids jump and giggle happily around them. Whatever happens next, she knows this moment was worth it.
