Bette Sublino's Justice Building farewell was a business meeting, wrapped up in pleasantries and tears: coded sentences, laconic phrases, a purse - exchanged for a gun.
The family sat, after she was on a train towards her death, in the kitchen: planning and strategizing, leveraging new contacts to hide their true industry. While it was already hidden under the veneer of The Antiquary: Restoration Services, years of subterfuge had made them lazy.
While a blind eye could be turned by their clients: Peacekeepers, the Nobles, the Criminals, the Rebels, the Excerpts, the Careers - weapons manufacturing is still illegal. Restoring obfuscated technology and illicit texts: a danger, lingering over their throats.
But the family business had sprung up after the earthquake, with secrets exposed in the cracks, the young taking over when the older generation laid dying in the rubble. If they survived in the wake of a nightmare, surely they can thrive here.
The Antiquary is an antiques & secondhand store nestled on The Row of District One: a neighborhood still recovering from the aftermath of the earthquake that wracked the city years ago. The front of the shop is what one would expect of the storefront: jewelry and watches, crystal sculptures and grandfather clocks - treasures found where one least expects it.
But talk to the right person, say the right phrases, and you'll be led into the offices (or the opposite, sometimes a house call is appreciated), where a request - always in person, always after ensuring no bugs are present - is made. In The Armory, Weapons are built, items are restored, for a price - fair, not cheap, not extravagant, but fair.
The workshop is stored deep underground, a new setup gained from their relationship with The Excerpts, a cult-like group with a legality akin to their own. Here, aspiring craftsmen render the illegal anew, always with a tender, elegant, flair.
Goods are delivered when the time is right, in plain sight or under the cover of night. As always, help is nearby in case things go sour. And they have, before - but preparedness is key.
Honest work, after all, always attracts.
Hi! This is a Sublino/La Torre family plot - anyone is welcome to join with original characters! This family primarily uses South Asian faceclaims, and diversity is always welcome<3 Join #the-antiquary on slack!
Characters can be divided into these four departments:
FRONT-OF-HOUSE
Those who primarily work for The Antiquary, with varying knowledge of The Armory hidden beneath. They are cashiers and assistants, caretakers and just kids, making their way through District One.
OPERATIONS
They are salespeople and accountants, messengers and tacticians - people who find deals and acquire them, who maintain relationships and aren't afraid to cut the right ones loose.
THE WORKSHOP
With an eclectic knowledge of the illicit business, the few members of The Workshop restore what was once beyond repair, build new objects, and rediscover history.
MUSCLE
Every illegal industry needs a defense squad, and The Armory is no different; from subterfuge to physicality, they ensure that the family remains safe, no matter the cost.
