KATELYN PERSIMMON
One thing, perhaps the only thing that Katelyn liked about the Capitol was how easy it was to shop and find everything that you were looking for. There were so many stores, and so many of them filled a particular niche, more than a few of which were needlessly extravagant. Stores for jewelry, tattoo and body modification parlors, restaurants that specialized in everything from seafood to mutation meat. That last one made her stomach roil. But then again, everything about the games was celebrated in the Capitol. It was a part of the culture, ingrained in the very fabric of society. A part of her wondered if they would feel differently if twenty-four children from the Capitol were chosen instead.
Another part of her was sickened to think that most of them would probably find it exciting. The elevator she was in dinged and she stepped out onto Eleven’s floor. Fintemaelon hadn’t gotten back yet, but that was alright with her. She’d told him to take the avox assigned to their floor with him while he ran a couple errands, more for her benefit than anything else; the whole concept of avox’s bothered her to no end, and she’d rather not have the poor girl standing around the room like a statue, because she sure as hell wasn’t going to order her around. It was still very early in the morning, and the tributes were probably asleep, if they had been able to that is. She had no idea what Harb and Kirito were up to.
She was happy to note that she’d found everything she needed, and fresh to boot. Butter, eggs, sugar, pecans, every spice, etc. Katelyn set the bag of ingredients down and set the oven to preheat. After tying her hair back and washing her hands, she got her pink apron out and fastened it around her torso and got the cake pans and bowls out. She’d bought an electric mixer as well, wanting to speed the process up however she could. The first step was to core and slice the fresh pineapple for later, as well as de-pit the cherries.
Then the butter went into the mixer, followed by sugar until it was fluffy. The eggs were next, beaten well, with just a teaspoon of vanilla extract. She smiled; the cake Rex had asked for was actually pretty easy to make. She set the bowl aside and filled another with flour, baking powder and salt, stirring until it looked mixed enough, before alternating adding the mixture to the first bowl with dashes of buttermilk.
Then it was time to get the pans ready. She poured brown sugar into each, lovingly patting it down smooth, then arranged the slices of pineapple and cherries over it. The batter was next, equal amounts in both pans. Finally, time for the oven. She put both inside and set the timer for forty-five minutes. Now she had time to make the frosting. It was simple enough, softened butter, pineapple juice and confectioner’s sugar.
It only took a couple minutes to mix and she put it into the fridge to keep in cold. Katelyn leaned against the counter and sighed. As terrified as she was at the thought of having kids that the Capitol could rip from her arms at the reaping, she had to admit, she liked the thought of being a mom. Of cooking meals for little children, holding them in her arms. Tucking them in at night. The tributes were her children in a way, but it wasn’t the same. Maybe Harbinger had the right idea?
It seemed like everywhere she turned everyone had kids. Mayor Vasco. Her brothers. Hell, Mace’s kid was grown now. Was that what she was missing? Would it fill that void in her heart she always tried to desperately ignore? That and somebody to love. Katelyn laughed quietly to herself. Katelyn Persimmon. District eleven’s golden girl. Not afraid of Capitol torture, but afraid to be in love. If they only knew…
She knew there had to be people that gossiped about it in the district, let alone games fanatics in the Capitol. After all, Harbinger and Kirito both had someone. And yet, here she was at twenty-nine, a lonely bachelorette with no romantic prospects on the horizon. Katelyn chided the little voice in her head that said there was something wrong with her and rolled out a kink in her neck. There was still quite a bit of time left, so she pulled out a frying pan and greased it, setting it on a burner and waiting for it to start popping before dropping a couple slices of bacon onto it.
As she waited for the cake to finish, she scrambled some eggs, toasted a stack of bread, grabbed a small plate for butter and a small pitcher of honey and set all of them in the middle of the table next to a pitcher of orange juice. Then she set out enough plates for the mentors and the tributes and left it at that; they could grab portions at their leisure. The timer dinged, and she put on her oven mitts, taking the cakes out after using a toothpick to check that they were done internally.
Still, it was going to be another ten minutes or so before she could invert them to cool completely. She used that time to blend herself a smoothie from some of the leftover pineapple, along with milk, coconut and mango that she had purchased previously.
Once the cakes were cooled, she stacked them and then frosted the sides, pressing chopped pecans all around it and admired her handiwork. Cakes weren’t as fun to do as cookies, but she still took a small measure of pride in making it. The real question was what to make tomorrow. She was leaning towards a pecan pie. Katelyn sipped at her smoothie and sat down at the table, wondering which of the four was going to leave their bedroom first.
