You gotta be so cold
To make it in this world
Everything was arithmetic when you boiled it down. In this case it was more geometry but that was semantics. Indigo whistled softly and worked backwards from the angle he needed in order to find the fraction to hit to use. As always, the edge of the ball was the easiest place to aim at and the simplest to recognize.
Slowly, carefully, he had a relaxed peace sign with his index and middle finger, careful to keep them about thirty degrees apart. Now for his stance. Legs wide. Bent down. Head low. Smooth stroke.
“Four-ball, middle pocket.” He murmured under his breath before taking the shot. It rolled in beautifully, and Indigo straightened up with a pleased smile on his face, one that rapidly fell away when he realized that there was someone else in the room. Poppy. Rohan.
From the look on her face and the slight sway in her step he was certain she’d been drinking; he supposed he would have been too had he lost the challenge to so many others after crowing about his vaunted genius at the dinner table. But, as he was in fact, a genius, he and Adrien had come in first.
Though he was still surprised and a little amused that Beryl and Violet had come in at a close second. His gaze lingered on Poppy for a moment before he turned back to the billiard table, suddenly feeling as though the temperature in the room had been turned up. Why did his face feel so hot?
Where Amrin was ice, pristine and unchipped radiating a coolness that warned people away, Poppy was a raging fire, effortlessly oozing that raw animal magnetism that took other people years of practice to maintain. She was a natural. He sank the nine and started calculating his next shot, debating what to say to the girl.
It was incredibly late, but he’d always been a night owl, and after spending all that time agonizing whether or not to talk to Adrien and then enjoying a delicious sandwich he’d gone to the game room in the hope that he’d be able to tire his mind out enough to sleep.
“Done with the ah, challenge?” he said after a moment, keeping his eyes on the seven. “Placement was a tad sloppy, wasn’t it Poppy?” he added, chuckling nervously at his own joke.
Yeah, you're a natural
