A whip cracks and sparks spread across the afternoon sky. While feet flip and bodies bend in the constant repetition of rehearsal, my eyes angle towards the coloring atmosphere. Billowing clouds of cotton candy pink gently wander over head, while dreams of adventure meander through my mind. A solo swallow sways through the curving edges of the serene sight, and further I am drawn out of my tent of clatter and chaos. The world keeps on spinning, but I float in thought above its clamor.
Alas, a wry whistle severs my wings and sends me hurting back to the Earth. An angered expression alight with irritation radiates from the face of Lena, another afternoon of an absent minded Creed. My sister stares as the screams of my punishment puncture the space and spurs distaste across the edges of my lips. On a typical day, I would wither at the repercussions of my daze, but today I hold no patience for juggling the fire of an unappeased ring master. Today I flip free from my wire and leave while her words still ripple the air behind me.
Outside the tent of dreams and terrors, I find sanction in the pull of sinister smoke. Embers engage in a dance with my lunges, while my feet guide me towards a far better distraction. Following the streets of stone and cobble, I know my destination is not far. His blonde hair and rich eyes. His awkward speech but fascinating smile.
With every step he is closer than before.
The wind whines with warning of the coming night, but my passion does not falter to the breeze. It has been weeks since we met, weeks since I have last seen the features of the boy I see in the cotton candy clouds. But the weeks of wondering end tonight, and again my eyes will fall upon soft skin and radiant eyes. Tonight there will be ease instead of work, warmth instead of cold, unison instead of soliloquy.
Stone streets veer into pavement as a building comes into view. Boys and girls of every age traverse through the pavilion of statues on their way home from training. Past the silver of Cricket, around the bronze of Julian. A home of careers with desires to end our District's drought. A home to the boy I've come searching for.
A nearby bench provides for the perfect waiting place as my eyes endlessly watch the sliding doors. What feels like centuries expire before I spot his sea of blonde. A moment of nervousness paralyzes me as I question the right words to say, after all, we barely know each other. However, angst gives way to excitement as I hurry up behind him and launch myself over his shoulders with flip.
What can I say? I do tricks when I'm anxious.
I bury my nerves with a smile though, as I turn to swim in the seas of his eyes.
"Come out with me tonight. I want to get to know you more than just one night at the circus."
