AGNES SWEENEY
The past month had went as quickly as it had come. Agnes had quickly shifted to fit more of the idea of a Career pupil. Her stature seemed to grow in confidence, although she definitely still had a bit of whimsy and there was a certain wanderlust in her eyes that could never go away. She still studied astrology at night, but there was certainly a lost interest. But the stars were always going to be near the forefront of her brain. They motivated her every single day, and with a full moon in Gemini, Agnes had most certainly acted a little out of character.
Training was going quite well at the center. She was wise enough to know when to speak up and when to listen, although Velvet had only grown a little more tolerable of Agnes since they'd first met. Additionally, Agnes had gotten all sorts of threats from Velvet, but they'd subsided. She wasn't sure if it was because Agnes had improved and had proved she was willing to work hard to perform well, or if it was because Agnes' dad was quite the businessman and seemed to have work out a deal with Damask. It wasn't but a day or two after their initial rendezvous that Agnes was being sent home with athletic wear. It definitely made Agnes feel like One Of Them, but she did not feel like herself in them.
What brings Velvet and Agnes together on this day is an invitation to a tarot card reading. Agnes had put on her most charming impression and convinced Velvet to agree to a reading, a skill that Agnes had swiftly taken up, reading tarot books by the handful.
Agnes found herself sitting in the outdoor section of a diner in the district. Navarro's was quite a popular place to eat, there were tons of patrons from all different walks of life that came into the restaurant. Dad had lent her some money for the meal, she put on a flowing canary yellow summer dress, and a thick red headband to boot. In her handbag she carried her deck of tarot cards, which she shuffled and placed in front of her upon sitting down. She was quite punctual and didn't take it personally that Velvet wasn't there yet. She wasn't expecting her at least for a few more minutes.
She did have a feeling of dread washing over her. The reaping was in just a week. The inevitability of who was chosen to go to fight to the death was not something that Agnes had grown used to, but she found ways to cope with this feeling. The most recent method meant she was always reminding herself of her progress with a bow. She'd made progress quite quickly, but only in archery. Everything else had little to no progress to show for.
The sun beamed down above her, casting a shadow once it laid itself out over the top of the green umbrella in the center of the table. Agnes took a sip of her water, feeling a cold chill travel down her throat and then overtake her core. She stared deeply at the back of the tarot cards, their black surface staring back at her. Her Aquarian heart fluttered at the thought of being reaped, but she did not have much time to dwell on it as Velvet had just arrived.
