Name: Lorelai Bigsby
Age: 18
Gender: F
District/Area: 11
Appearance:
Doe eyed, quite short, and elegant - Lorelai has always been one to fill up space despite her small stature. From a photograph, it may look like Lorelai is taller than she is. Her arms definitely hang a few inches lower than the next girl of the same height; her legs extend from her torso like long ribbons. There’s not a single ounce of pudge on her, crafted from a vegetarian lifestyle and a love for movement.
Lorelai’s eyes are warm, chocolate irises sprinkled with gold flakes – caramel orbs of feigned sympathy and greed. It’s quite easy to make eye contact with her. They seem to invite people in with warmth and comfort, even if she doesn’t have the best of intentions at times. Folded down at the ends, it almost looks like she’s always carrying around a pout. It’s easy to pity Lorelai, even if she is the youngest, and thus, the most spoiled of the Bigsby children.
Bigsby Farms is a place of luxury, and Lorelai is the physical embodiment of the class, elegance, and prosperity of the family’s business.
Her ankles are often sore, swollen things. Hours of dance in her dance studio lend her to many bruises and bumps on her body, which she covers well with a wardrobe of long, flowing silk dresses. Her legs drift along the wooden floors in sweeping motions, arms moving with the grace of a newborn butterfly – innate and effortless. Her coffee colored hair is often tied back, offering up a stance of humble beauty. She does not adorn herself with makeup and accessories or anything of the sort, she stares at the face of artificial beauty and tells it, “You’re not needed.”
The youngest of the Bigsby children is a beautifully fragile composition – a direct reflection of the success of her family’s farm and of the hard work, albeit if there are several ill-gotten gains.
Personality:
Humility is important for Lorelai. At least, portraying a sense of humility is important. She’s quite astute and self-aware and knows that she is privileged. The world does not owe her a thing at all, and she knows this, but that does not prevent her from wanting more and more. She is a material girl at heart – a self-worth that’s only as extensive as the things she owns and the way she looks. Although she’s got a soft exterior, a southern belle at first glance, she’s much more rough around the edges on the inside. That being said, she thinks quite highly of herself. Showers of compliments have lent her some sort of unyielding rainbow above her head. Clouds don’t seem to dull her shine. The best part? She’s living in her own pot of gold.
Lorelai exudes elegance. She moves with intention and doesn’t have an awkward bone in her body, all supported by a spoiled lifestyle. She’s barely had to work a day in her life. Her idea of hard work is spending time in the dance studio, which has paid off. It’s hard to take your eyes off of Lorelai, to put it simply. A thoroughly pure Korean descent means she does not look similarly to the majority of the District. The Bigsby family is quite identifiable, partly because they’re consistently clean.
She’s intentionally dismissive, not one to offer pity or sympathy for those less than fortunate. The world is owed to her, and she’s constantly seeking more power… more money… to be more beautiful. In fact, she’s never quite content with anything, no matter how blessed or how spoiled she is. This is to be expected when you’re a daughter of Irvin Bigsby. Expectations are high, and Lorelai meets the expectations. Quite frankly, she is the perfect model of what a Bigsby child should be. Soft on the outside, but sharp on the inside.
Taurus did get the best of her in the sense that she’s quite the foodie. A little quirk, and truly the way to her heart, is through good food. Her privilege extends to this as well. She's become the cook of the family recently, and uses nothing but the freshest of ingredients. That’s one of the benefits of living in District 11. Food is typically fresh. Poverty may be rampant but there is generally not a shortage of food. Enough spoiled fruits or vegetables late to ripening during harvest season often end up spread throughout the kitchen tables. Lorelai, much like the rest of her family, would never willingly use scraps.
History:
Lorelai was born into a wealthy family. There’s no secret there. Bigsby Farms is a leader in the District’s exports and as such have been blessed enough to receive stipends multiple times over the last half-century of the family’s business directly from the Capitol. At times, Irvin and Matilda Bigsby are not even sure what they’re supposed to do with the amount of money they have.
This means Lorelai has not had the impoverished, unfortunate life of many District 11 citizens. Her childhood was full of new toys, new clothes, a private tutor, dance lessons, plenty of junk food (typically cookies and crème balls, they’ve always been Lorelai’s favorite), a 3 story house, pet horses, and pet rabbits. While other people in the district break sweat every single day, Lorelai grew up in a house with air conditioning. The gap between the bottom and the top has always been ginormous.
Matilda Bigsby is hardly a worker for the farm, but she is most definitely a great mother to Lorelai. That is, if being a great mother means being a great influencer. Lorelai is a near spitting image of her mother, although a little smaller. Matilda has treated Lorelai as if she were Midas himself. When Matilda looks at Lorelai, her eyes twinkle. It took 2 tries to get there, but Matilda Bigsby thinks the absolute world of her daughter, and carries her pride around on her sleeve. Of course, Matilda is nowhere near perfect either. The image of the Bigsby family was much more beautiful than what its composition was.
Like Buddha, the riches were not enough for Desmond, Matilda’s first born son. While Lorelai soaked up the luxury and still does, Desmond sought after love and an inner peace while coming into adulthood, and found it in the slums of the District. He lives a happy life now in an average house just right outside the district square, before the land becomes larger and the houses further apart. He lives with his wife and his own two kids. Although these children share the same last name, Irvin and Matilda Bigsby do not even so much as get them a present for their birthday. Desmond’s decision to leave the family’s line of business has put quite a weight on Irvin Bigsby, as there is no male next in line to inherit the farm once he kicks the bucket.
Lorelai has no problem holding grudges, and most definitely has the same disdain for her brother as her mother and father. She treats her dad’s employees better than Desmond. They used to have quite a good relationship. Hide and seek was there favorite game; Desmond would always find Lorelai shut in a cabinet under the bathroom sink, or maybe a cabinet in the kitchen. Although Lorelai, like a true Taurus, does not like change, it never got old hiding in the same spots. This was pure joy for Lorelai, and sometimes she does miss it, but decisions are made in life and the Bigsby’s did not approve of Desmond’s.
Of course, when this happened, there was a lot of backlash. It was a hot topic within the district. Although citizens were often miles apart from one another, word of Desmond’s betrayal to the family’s name and longevity spread more quickly than Lorelai spreading butter on a piece of toast. This hurt the Bigsby’s reputation especially, and multiple public statements printed in the District’s paper were made to diffuse the district of the situation. That they’d discussed it and settled the differences and that Bigsby Farms was still here to prosper. Lorelai enjoyed the attention. She normally enjoys the attention no matter what – even if it’s negative. It’s normally not, though. She does serve as a golden child of the District, at least in her eyes. For all she knows, she’s the saving grace of District 11.
Dance lessons started early for Lorelai. Lorelai’s always been graced with agility and with the ability for self expression. This never came in the way of drawing or painting, but first seen in her prodigal beginnings of dance. Thus, Lorelai’s quite flexible nowadays. A hyperextended leap, backbend, fouettés are also not a problem. Part of the love of dance comes from the vanity behind it. Lorelai knows how beautiful she is when she dances. That vanity showed itself one winter before her 13th birthday. There was a district talent show and clearly Lorelai was one that needed to express her talent, and so she did. However, another girl around the same age blew everyone’s expectations and performed a much more technically sound dance, and ultimately ended up victorious over a 2nd place Lorelai Bigsby. This clearly could not be, and Lorelai immediately threw a fit to Irvin after leaving. “Dad, I w- was clearly,” Lorelai slipped out between sobs, “b-better than her. She sucked! I n- need my tr-trophy!” Sniffle. Tear-wipe.
The next week she had a trophy in hand underneath first place and a new headline in the District’s paper read, “BIGSBY GIRL NAMED CO-CHAMPION IN TALENT SHOW.” Being a Bigsby meant problems came in much more extravagant ways.
Her love of cooking came a few years after that. It really started as nothing beyond making an omelette in the morning, or maybe baking a lemon pepper salmon filet for dinner, but soon Lorelai realized there was a beauty to combining flavors and putting effort into the things she ate. She started to study recipe books like the bookworm she always had made fun of until them, and for this very reason, she holds this passion very quietly within her. To others, she is just a simply innocent daughter of the Bigsby family.
And that’s where the situation currently stands. A self-centered closet connoisseur, a natural born dancer, and an image of a family business. It’s only a matter of time before there’s a shift in Lorelai’s life. She is 18, after all, the age Desmond was when he left.
