As Cyril sat on the train that was taking him farther and farther from the safe arms of his family, the comfort of the District that he knew so well, he couldn't help but laugh at the irony of his situation. How many long nights had he spent imagining the wonders that lay outside the District 9 gates? How many gloomy days had he longed to get a chance to see the world, the beauty that it had to offer, the things it could teach him? Now here he was, outside the gates, about to see more of the world than most people in his district could ever hope to experience. Cyril had imagined his journey out of the district to fill him with joy greater than any feeling he'd experienced before, but as he sat on the soft, luxurious bed of his opulent compartment, he felt hollow.
It had been easier to feel determined, to feel hopeful, when he had been back in the Justice Building. When he had his family there to console him. But they felt a lifetime away, hopelessly out of reach. It was as if they had been the ones to get on the train and leave him behind. It felt like they had taken a piece of his soul with them, the space where it had once been was now a void of emptiness. He knew he had to find a way to pick up the pieces of himself, to find that determination again. He steeled himself to stand up and search the luxurious Capitol train. He wanted to find Eos Delacroix.
He had been so caught up in his own mind at the reaping that he hadn't registered who his district partner was until they had boarded the train. Cyril's first reaction was one of fear when he realized he was going into the games with a Delacroix; he knew of the family's ties with the mafia, the bloodthirstiness they could exhibit. He was sure she could kill him a thousand different ways if she needed to, and given where they were headed, there was a good chance she would need to. Eos was petite for an eighteen-year-old, but Cyril knew to underestimate her was to dig your own grave.
She was dangerous, she was someone Cyril should run from, should hope never has him cross her mind at all. But there was something about her that kept playing on his mind: She had volunteered. Not for a sister, not as a career. She put her life on the line so that someone else didn't have to. There was something more to Eos Delacroix than the reputation that preceded her. That something was enough to drive Cyril to find her and extend an olive branch to the dangerous girl on the train with him.
When he finally found her, he hesitated for a brief moment. What could he say to her? What did he have to offer her? He was young. He was scrawny. He'd spent his whole life being forgettable, unapproachable. What could he do to connect with the girl who volunteered to battle death? The girl who was willing to protect another?
"I have a sister."
As he uttered these words he took himself by surprise, and yet he continued to speak. "Her name is Jools. She's almost six years old, and she's my entire world." He suddenly found himself imagining that it had been Jools who had been reaped. Jools who had been faced with this death sentence. Jools who had been saved by Eos.
"I know who you are," he continued, "I won't tell anyone about what you're capable of. I just ask that you give me a chance." A chance. To survive these games. To return to Jools. Cyril braced himself for what Eos had to say.
