// theo kayne
for years, the kayne family had lived on this plot of land. it was a simple quaint cottage before the outskirts of district seven, one that many knew marked the beginnings of the deeper woods. and just as they had lived on this land for many years, theo had spent many years exploring these woods. so much so that she had discovered and eventually memorized the path to a small clearing near The Fence, the same clearing that she had buried her worms all those years ago and the same clearing that she went to after every reaping.
the reaping this year was the same as every year. theo had stood in the herd of girls her age, black hair and pale skin looking out of place as they always did in a district full of brown hair and olive-toned flesh. the boy on the stage this year kind of looked like tamsin, something that both shocked and sickened her. how easily that could have been either one of them, and how easily they would have died in this years' arena. the thought made her nauseous.

pushing past the brush that surrounded the clearing, theo made her way to her favorite tree, plopping her small body right under it. for a few moments, she felt alone, something welcoming in a time where you never really knew who was watching. but slowly, the feeling of being watched came back, but not because of any capital drones flying overhead or peacekeepers patrolling this part of the woods. (theo knew that peacekeepers didn't like this part of the woods, called it haunted or something to that effect.) no, this was a more palpable sort of watching, someone who didn't mean to and didn't have any authority to but was doing it anyways.
a rustle from the woods announced their entrance. "hello?" theo called slightly above her normal voice level, which was to say, still not very loud. "i don't mean you any harm."
