We'll dance and sing 'til sundown
And feast with abandon
And feast with abandon

Sky upon sky, the glass-winged conquerors of a new land do not leave so much as a shadow in their wake. Great pale bears and slick-skinned beasts with mighty tusks have been devoured by this swarm of endless hunger, as if — in a single fluttering moment — their existence had simply... been undone. The air left vacant; the ice clean; bones dropped into an ocean that only knows how to hide things, if any bones remained at all. Evidence of paw prints and their abrupt disappearance have been swept smooth again by the breeze, leaving only shimmering ice dusted with snow. Picturesque.
With nothing else around for miles, the hunger has had only emptiness to feed upon for days upon days upon agonizing days and, like this, it grows. When the doors of the spacecraft open like the mouth of a cursed foe crying out in sudden fear, the death that has been awaiting this moment holds its breath in anticipation. Do not scare the food away, the swarm warns itself, we are so hungry. Let it come into the light. We are so hungry. Let it come, let it come, let it come. The many mouthed beast waits so long that the weaker (or simply weak-willed) hearts think they will surely perish from the waiting, that perhaps this is a trick meant to keep the food for only a greedy few. No! They begin to refuse. No! We are so hungry! Truth and madness spread with equal force as the swarm takes flight from resting places up and down and all around the cables, like snow falling upwards into the sky. Waiting will not feed us.
