"you are weak
but not foolish
you have learned
how to die."
Yellow blooms and draping greens greet Kit in the morning. He's finally warmed up after yesterday's foray into the outside world and when Jacob and him found this place, he'd shut his eyes too quickly to notice much of anything, exhausted from blood loss and the hazardous climb over a long fall to death below. He still remembers the shaking fear, the worry that he'd lose his grip and fall, leaving Jacob all alone. He doesn't want Jacob to be alone, that's all.
This time, he took the second watch and he lets Jacob sleep five extra minutes in turn. the world around them wakes and it's an odd thing after nearly two days of sterile environments with no creatures in sight. Through reading the group chat, he's seen that there are robots about too, although he's not one hundred percent on whether they're doing ok or not. Here, things seem almost natural, he swears that he can see some movement in the undergrowth and keeps one hand on the blaster at his side.
But still the flowers that surround him are distracting and he's itching to explore by the time that Jacob is fully awake. For a moment, he's forgotten that they're in a death game. Maybe that's the point of a place such as this though, Kit doesn't think he's ever seen anywhere so beautiful in his life. The gardens before them seem to go on for ages and everywhere he looks, he sees more growth. Platforms above his head hold more than their fair share of the bounty, plots overgrown from lack of care.
The platform they decided to rest on last night stands midway up a spiral stair and looking over the edge lends them a pretty good view of the surrounding area. Kit's eyes are on the faraway ceiling, a blurred pattern of wheat fields and various other crops dance in front of his eyes and for the first time since entering the arena, he feels at peace.
.-Jacob, maybe we should just stay here, wait it out until...-. until what? Until it's just the two of them left and all they can do is gun each other down or wait to die by the talons of a mutt? Kit drops his hands, unable to finish the thought because there is nothing really to end it with. He offers a soft smile instead, strange hopelessness settling over him heavier than a winter blanket. There is no good end to this and the fact that he's made it to the third day is a joke with a shitty punchline.
Death will come today or tomorrow, maybe even the day after, it doesn't matter when, Kit will die. Jacob will try to protect him and then just get hurt in the process, Kit is dead weight. Sam. Jacob reminds Kit of Sam in so many ways and it isn't just the physical likeness, but the want to protect Kit all the time, the sacrifice that he made of his own hide in order to protect Kit's.
Kit doesn't want someone else to die for him, he never wanted it in the first place.
He won't let it happen again. He'll die before Jacob can take the hit for him. In so many ways, surviving Sam was the hardest part of his injury. The grief of losing his best friend is still hard to comprehend. He thinks of Paris back home, waiting for him to come back and Kit never seeing him again. That was a hard grief too. He wanted to see Paris grow old, to see wrinkles grow around his eyes that crinkle up like paper when he smiles.
But he wants that for Jacob too, for him to get grey hairs and laughter lines too. Jacob has siblings at home, a little brother that's deaf just like Kit. He needs to get back to them. No one really needs Kit, he's only been a burden for months now. He's the kid that killed that popular boy, Sam, with his dumb experiment that exploded in the science labs.
He picks a yellow daisy and goes on his tiptoes in front of Jacob. Carefully, he tucks it behind the taller boy's ear. .-Good luck for the day ahead, ok?-. he signs, .-Don't take it off.-.
Perhaps he's a little selfish with all of his wants but Kit doesn't care. He's too tired to care.
They move down the staircase and for once, Kit is the first to spot the danger. Fear grips him, the forms of two other tributes between the trees. This is their first time running across someone else since the bloodbath. He takes a second to make sure it isn't a friend, though everyone counts as foe here, and tugs on Jacob's hand.
He points silently and hands shaking, shoots before they can shoot first.
"I'm so sorry," he whispers as a shot rings out.
