If there was one thing that Lilith didn’t particularly envy about victors, it would be their instant celebrity. Her parents would lose their minds urging her to rub elbows with a victor, so that she too could become great, and everyone who had nothing to do with the Games would fall to their behest without considering what it took for them to get to this stage. Not to mention that people wanted to take more than they wanted to give, and it was never just an one and done deal. If someone needed her, she wanted to be needed only once. She couldn’t imagine dedicating her life not only to future tributes, but to anyone else who considered her to be indebted to them, with nothing in return. It was like losing your humanity.
Staring at Nico Thorne, she could see that he was still human, not too far off from her age. What could she possibly gain from talking to a victor? Reminders of how lucky he was to win, or how lucky she was to never fight at all? She’d pass. Companionship? She doubted it. You can’t form a relationship with someone from one conversation. You know nothing about each other. Or rather, they knew nothing about her. There was nothing there. Yet, Lilith’s curiosity continued to override her reason.
No, she had nothing to gain, but she also had nothing to lose.
Lilith slowly found her way over to Nico until she was standing before him, hands tucked in the pockets of her jeans. She was silent for a few seconds before finally finding the words to say.
“It’s exhausting, isn’t it?” she remarked. “Trying to put on a show for everyone?”
