Day Four Anthem

After the wind settles down from a roar to a murmur and the rocking of the ship comes to a rest, the maintenance robots return to sweep the shattered glass flooring into neat piles. Quiet whirring fills the halls as they do their work without interference, the new residents of the ship having learned that some things are better left alone. Snow breaks through in some places, but quickly turns to patches of soft ice — evidence of the world outside that seems to be conspiring with the world inside as some of the hallways are transformed into skating rinks. One misstep is as likely to send you sliding into laughter as it is to send you soaring in the direction of one of those small deathtraps of shattered glass. More than ever, you are reminded how important it is to watch your every step.

There is a beauty in this area, the likes of which you’ve never seen, but — as the anthem blares and the faces of the dead appear — you know all too well of the danger that lurks beneath.
