The first time I remember seeing my mother legitimately laugh was when Elite Hops shot a fucking laser beam at Hanaa Darton and killed her. She still talks about it sometimes, giving him all the credit even though it was clearly that girl Fayre who deserved it. She was the one who buried her damn saber into my half-sister's stomach.

If there's anything you should know about me, it's definitely that.

Well, I guess that and probably also the fact that Ma is one of those people who take care of dead bodies after violent acts have been committed. She doesn't like run a morgue or anything as mundane as that though, no—she had to be one of those people who investigate bodies that have died in suspicious ways, had to be one of the people responsible for taking a body apart and inspecting it piece by rotting fucking piece.

Do you have any idea what it's like to listen to someone saw through bone? The loud, imposing noise of the drill going through someone's breastbone is forever seared into my memory. Our entire house always and forever is going to smell of peppermint oil, the only thing that my mother has ever used to mask the smell of a decomposing body. I have no idea how my mother got involved in the damned job, but I've been her morbid little apprentice for as far back as I can remember, much to my eternal chagrin.

Honestly, I think that a lot of the appeal must be imagining, one day, the possibility of my father lying on her table, cut to bits.

Sometimes, I have the same dream.
