Day Five Anthem

There’s a small series of click click clicks as a few harmless looking buttons are pushed and switches flipped. It would be easy to miss, except for the part where — all at once — every light on the ship powers down. Each sound intensifies, echoing dramatically throughout the hallways and cavernous rooms, as the mechanical buzz of electricity disappears and silence evolves into something threatening. The smallest of movements suddenly shouts your location to anyone nearby and you become paranoid that even your breathing is too loud. Brites flare to life in the darkness, as if mocking the idea of safety lights, and float peacefully along the ceilings, oblivious to the fears and troubles of the ship’s other residents. These false stars provide just enough illumination to stretch shadows and imply outlines of foes that feel much larger than you remember anyone being…
...
...the brites seem to glow more intensely as they lead tributes to the promise of an exit, but the door to the outside world opens to an even larger darkness. An aurora dances high above, washing out the stars. Vivid green is struck through with the most lurid fuchsia, but the beauty turns wicked as you hold your hand out to discover that this strange light doesn’t touch you. When your watch blazes brilliant gold with the anthem, the shock of it blinds you, your vision haloed as the faces of the dead seem to ask you why it’s so difficult to look them in the eyes.
Sky Bison, District 5
Hanaa Darton, District 7
With two gone, 16 remain. 15 more must die if you ever hope to truly take flight — back to your home.
And in the Cable Bridge, something seems amiss.
Congratulations on surviving Day 4!
