walking in my sleep
like the naked trees
will they wake up again?
do they sleep? do they dream?
like the naked trees
will they wake up again?
do they sleep? do they dream?
Peace.
Quiet.
Two of the things that Eos longed for the most, but seemed to be the hardest to find.
Peace was a rarity here.
Brief moments could be found at night, when all the tributes seemed to have a silent agreement that this would be a time to forget why they were here. To forget what they needed to do.
Just a moment, no matter how brief. A moment to rest.
But for once, sleep did not come easy in the arena.
Dreams seemed to evade her, but when they came, they were brief, loud, and filled with the color red. It didn't take long before Calypso, Percy, and the others would appear. She would wake up with sweat dripping down her brow, her hands clammy, breathing loud and heavy. Eos was sure she would wake the others, but the gentle snoring reassured her they were still there, and for now safe.
They couldn't leave her.
Not yet at least.
After knowing they were safe she was finally able to find sleep. The next time she opened her eyes it was morning, or it was supposed to be. The arena was pitch black, as if the Gamemaker's never woke up themselves. Her hands fumbled around for her bag, she knew there was something useful in there. Finally, she found what she was looking and slid them over her face. At first it seemed to be a useless item, but now she couldn't be more thankful that she picked up the goggles. She blinked the rest of the sleep from her eyes and tried to become accustomed to the green hue. Elite was on her left, and Fayre was on her right. Or at least she was supposed to be.
She was gone.
"Fayre? Fayre!" she called out in desperation. They would have heard someone if they would have taken her. Her canon if she would have died. She was simply, gone. She began to shake Elite, to rouse him from his slumber. "Elite, Elite. Wake up," she paused until she had his full attention, eyes locked on each other. "She's gone."
Then she was interrupted by another noise, footsteps, but they were too heavy to be Fayre's. Eos stood up and grabbed her gun, ready to ward off the attackers. There was another duo stumbling in the dark. Their faces grim, familiar. Allies of the girl they helped slaughter the day before.
"What, you guys can't get enough?"
After she stepped she took a silent step to her right. They didn't seem to be as lucky as them, they had no goggles, they were practically blind, and she didn't want to make herself any easier of a target. Her eyes flashed to Elite, she hoped that he understood her movement, that if he dared to talk he would do the same. He was holding his goggles with one hand to his face, the strap missing, probably used on some invention. Her eyes rolled to the back of her head, but she quickly turned her attention back to the problem in front of them.
"You shouldn't have come here,"
Her voice was soft, barely a whisper, but she still took a step to her left.
Secretly, she had hoped to find a day of peace, a day of no blood, a day with no death.
But, no matter how hard she searched for it, it would not be found.
There would never be peace here.
feel it as the wind
strokes my skin
i am moved by the chill
hear the winter bird sing
