eloise abramovich
The air in the district was cooler than usual for the summer. A gentle breeze blew through the streets, and the sun hovered low behind a gathering of clouds. Eloise sat out on the front porch of their sister’s house, their treasured bass guitar sitting in their lap. They kicked their feet up on the nearby wicker coffee table as they aimlessly plucked at the strings. The strings echoed metallically, as the instrument wasn’t plugged in, but they didn’t feel like annoying their neighbors with bass riffs that day. They just liked the feeling of the strings under their fingers. It was comforting.
The neighborhood was bustling, as usual. There never seemed to be a moment of peace this side of Eight. People sped by on their ways to or from work, children too young for school danced around waving toys in their hands, teenagers on their lunch breaks shared food and exchanged laughs. Eloise watched them all with a careful eye. If you didn’t know better, you wouldn’t think these people feared for their lives every day. Sometimes, they wished they didn’t know better. Ignorance truly was bliss. They tried to remember at what age they realized that they’d spend the rest of their life being struck down, but then they decided that was too deep a thought for such a nice day, so they tucked it away in the back of their mind for another time.
Their sister emerged from inside the house, pushing the creaking screen door open. She looked Eloise up and down, a slightly judgmental look in her eye. “Are you going to be here all day?” she asked.
Eloise nodded.
“Boring.” Their sister crossed her arms and shifted her balance to the other leg, cocking her hip out. “I’m going to go pick up some stuff from the square and then meet a friend. Any interest?”
Eloise shook their head. It should have been obvious from their comfortable position that they had absolutely no interest in leaving it.
“Alright. Whatever. See ya later.” Their sister strolled down the porch steps and headed down the street. Eloise watched her go, before turning back to their bass and plucking another string. They hoped their sister had a good day with whatever she was doing, but they were content to stay right where they were.
