When St. Clair Lyons struck oil on his portion of the family land shortly after the birth of his son Zion, it wasn't long after that he and Birdie betrayed the other members of the eco-terrorist group they had been a part of for more than half a decade — turning their friends in to the peacekeepers for the safety of their children... and a huge cash reward. Quietly using the money to buy up property throughout District Five (including the former homes of the friends they'd had arrested and sent to the DC), the Lyons family went into the oil business thinking that they could run things differently. Maybe if control of this resource stayed in the hands of District Five citizens instead of being sold for a quick profit to Capitolite investors then they could use their influence to do good. Birdie and St. Clair Lyons had always been idealistic in this way. They had also always been foolish and blind to their own selfishness.
Within a year or two District Five's primary industry switched from agriculture to oil, due in large part to lobbying from the suddenly rich and powerful Lyons family. They moved into an old world mansion on a sprawling estate just outside of the city — four stories of brick and beauty. It was close enough to keep an eye on their business, but far enough to hope that their children might be spared from the backlash of a community that had finally realized it had been swindled. What had been a fair price for the farmland they had been buying up (now owning a shocking majority of the District's land) was nothing compared to the value of the oil beneath the surface. This resentment endures and refuses to be forgotten, leading to the bullying of the Lyons children and a community that didn't mourn when their names were called up for the Games. It was what they deserved, everyone thought and maybe there was some truth to that.
Despite the harsh truths that built their home, a close-knit and loving family resides within, fiercely protective of one another. While the children know about their parents' uncouth tactics when buying up land, they don't know the full history of betrayal that was the beginning of everything. Instead they only know the sounds of the twins playing piano, clarinet, or ukulele as their parents sing along while waltzing, St. Clair stepping on Birdie's toes as she laughs so loud it drowns the song out. They know the empty spot on the Sunday brunch table where a bowl of whipped cream was set out for pancakes, only to be immediately stolen and devoured by Rio in the safety of one of her secret hiding places throughout the house. They know the quiet swish swish swish of pages in the library as Seville searches an endless stack of books for meaning to her life or the acrid scent of melting as one of Denali's questionable craft projects goes laughably wrong. They know the polite scribble of Lulu writing a story, giggling to herself and whispering all her favorite scenes to Ginny, no matter how many eyerolls she receives in return. They know freshly baked cookies. They know glitter everywhere. They know how to pry scandalous stories from their Grimgram after she's had too much to drink with dinner and they know how the mouse traps in the kitchen haven't been reset since the last time Zion snuck around setting them off in the middle of the night — trying to save hungry, innocent lives — four years ago.
All six of them have been raised with their parents' idealism. All six of them have been raised to be the kind of foolish that confuses what's good for their family with what's good for all.

Raised in a free spirited commune that valued environmental activism, Birdie grew up as one of the protestors that now write her name on their rally signs. Once upon another time she organized sit-ins on the mayor's lawn before joining forces with a more extreme group of friends who took things much further — breaking animals out from slaughterhouses

Childishly in love with Birdie; decades later, and he's still not over the fact that he somehow managed to con her into marrying him. Runs around the house pestering her and teasing her for attention. He has always defaulted to her lead and has never truly been the power behind the Lyons Oil Corporation, although that certainly doesn't mean he was ever innocent in any decision they've made together. He knows what he's done and isn't in denial the same way Birdie is, unable to look at his family and remember that the word regret exists. Much the same way Birdie and the children never cease to amaze him, the wealth and luxury that have become his standard of living always feel new. He's unable to be anything other than a slaughterhouse farmhand masquerading in high society.

Ever since finding out that his parents were partially responsible for the district industry change from agriculture to oil refining, Zion had suffered from night terrors and sleepwalking. Knowing that his blood ran black with the reason that the land is dying and people get sicker than they used to... it haunted him, causing him to wake up — screaming, clawing, gnashing his teeth — and always somewhere unexpected. A closet if he was lucky or maybe the middle of the street, but sometimes he woke to find himself in a stranger's yard on the other side of the district or lost in the woods. His sister Denali was the only one who knew why he was afflicted, yet Rio was who he sought for comfort from his demons.
He's generally remembered from his Games for wearing pink bunny footie pajamas, crying a lot, and being terrified of his own weapons.

future hospital intern hoping to live out her brain surgeon fantasy
Throughout her seventeen years of life, Seville has never truly felt emotion — not even when Zion and Denali were murdered. Like a living doll, she does her best to wear the correct expressions at the proper times, but there is nothing behind her smiles or tears — everything is fake, fake, fake. It's almost frustrating that she isn't even scared of people finding out her secret: that she's certain she has no soul. Rio knows, because Rio always knows, and although something about that nags at Seville's thoughts, it's unable to do much more. Locking herself in her room for days at a time, she'll lay there and contemplate the meaning of her life (there doesn't seem to be one) and wonder if the hunger gnawing at her stomach or the thirst clawing at her tongue might be what desperation or longing feel like. It's not until her family breaks down her bedroom door that she goes back to "living" life... and even then, it's only because she knows she's supposed to. The best she can manage is to fixate on fantasies of what certain moments in life are meant to be — painting her face to perfection and obsessing over wearing the right outfit for an occasion — only to be annoyed and offended if something turns out even a little bit differently than she'd envisioned. Control is the only feeling she truly believes in.

The Lyons twins are, literally, joined at the hip. Tallulah can't imagine life without her sister by her side, but Peregrine longs for a moment of solitude as if it were salvation. Although they share no major organs, just blood circulation and their hip bones, the doctors have always said that cutting them apart would likely kill at least one of them. So, to Peregrine's perpetual disappointment, they have made their way through every single moment of life together: singing, dancing, and (when you're Peregrine) putting on more than one kind of show in an effort to find acceptance from the outside world. Peregrine is a brutal realist more than she is a pessimist and often comes off as unnecessarily harsh due to her constant use of sarcasm. She takes both Tallulah and her efforts to balance Peregrine's behavioral extremes for granted, but she also brings focus to Tallulah's flightiness and daydreaming, giving both of their imaginations a path towards becoming reality.

In an effort to appease her sister's dream of a life of her very own, Tallulah all too often sets herself aside. She is selfless to a fault, always willing to do what she can to help the people she cares about, frequently at her own expense. Even her hobbies are in the habit of focusing on other people: songs composed for their parents to sing along to, a shipping war over Denali's love life (complete with fanfiction written between the entries in her personal journal), baking to satisfy Rio's sweet tooth, doodling anatomical cheatsheets to help Seville study, or fencing to soothe the entire family's paranoia about her self-defense skills. Hers is the type of kindness that doesn't mind being taken advantage of, because without other people to focus on, she might have to admit that she's terrified of the difficulty of wanting things purely for herself. Society isn't quite sure what to do with her... and neither is she. Growing up; getting a job in the outside world; falling in love; being her own person — these are her worst fears.
Rio's imaginary friend (named Effie, short for Ephraim) is the wind. She believes in an unseen world, swearing that Effie whispers secrets to her on the breeze. Although she likes to think of herself as being very wise and mature — bestowing life advice as though she is world-weary — the rest of the world has a difficult time seeing such traits in a child prone to crying from loneliness on windless days. However, there's no denying that she is more perceptive than most, often picking up on the emotions (or lack thereof) that her siblings try to hide. It's enough to make them begin to wonder if perhaps she really does see more than any of them are able. Despite her odd ways and mischievous antics that generally revolve around pranking or glitter bombing people, she is perhaps the most mature of the Lyons siblings and is the wise keeper of their various secrets. Wild and free-spirited, she swears that her true wisdom comes from never forgetting to keep things fun.
