We forget the things we want to remember and remember the things we want to forget.
Age: He's not completely sure, but he thinks he's around 17.
Gender: Male
District/Area: District 9
Appearance:
Gavroche certainly did not get his father's bulky genes, but he got the height one. He stands at 6'3, and though it may be just a little above average for most guys, he finds it abnormally tall, making him feel like it just paints a bigger target on his back. His dark obsidian hair falls over his strangely colored eyes: emerald green mixed with a teal blue around the pupil, shading into gray in the middle ring, and turning to brown on the outer rim. He's been told that his eyes are exactly like his father's, and it frustrates him to have any resemblance of his childhood horror. Gavroche's eyes, also, are always glowing with a hint of suspicion. His build is more on the lean side, a trait he got from his mother, though he doesn't complain. Just enough muscle and fat to let him survive and operate properly without much lagging. The scars on his skin -- mostly in his upper body area -- have no specific story to tell, seeing as they range in different sizes, shapes, tones and whatnot, and it would be impossible for him to tell you how he got each one.
Personality:
Gavroche is pretty much as laid back and chill as you can get without the help of drugs. He really wouldn't mind just lounging around all day, sleeping, or simply hanging out with friends. He's mellow to the core, always willing to go with the flow even if he doesn't like it, though he surely will mumble and grumble to himself about the flaws. The boy doesn't trust anyone other than his uncle and mother, though he does tend to act friendly towards others sometimes. He's used to just keeping his troubles to himself; sucking it up and soldiering on, basically his life's motto. However, if his friends are venting to him and asking for advice, he'll do his best to help them, though his advice probably isn't the best to fallow, seeing as he doesn't usually get out in the real world other than whatever parts of it comes into his uncle's tavern.
Because of his dyslexia and CPS (Central Pain Syndrome), he dropped out of school when he was fourteen to work full time at his uncle's tavern. There, he had no need to read very much -- aside from recipes, of course -- and sheet music. He tries to not read in front of people, whether they be his best friends or not, simply because he becomes very frustrated when it takes him roughly ten minutes to read a single page out loud. And even when he reads silently, it still takes him a while. Because of this, he tries memorizing recipes used in the tavern so he won't have to read them constantly. The only thing he has confidence in reading is sheet music for his trumpet, which he holds near and dear to his heart. The music notes, since they have no syllables, are much easier for him to read, and he loves it. He plays his trumpet everyday, usually after the restaurant hours. Music and culinary arts, as he would tell you, pretty much saved him. He usually gets intense burning sensations in his abdomen at spontaneous times, and once it hits him, he's pretty much down for a good hour or so, simply writhing and trembling until the phantom-like pain disappears.
Gavroche also is terribly claustrophobic. Because of what his father did to him when he was younger, he freaks out whenever he's in a massive group of people all squished together. Not only that, but in small rooms his airway constricts and he becomes terrified, wanting desperately to get out to the open air of either the outside or a larger room. Hugs are definitely a no-no.
History:
Gavroche's father was an "underground cage fighter" -- in layman's terms, a fighter in a secret system of pankration style fighting. He was known simply as "The Bull" because of his broad shoulders and bulging muscles. The rule(s) in the matches were simple: anything goes. And in their hidden arenas -- which were usually in basements of abandoned houses -- The Bull dominated. Eyes were gouged, ears were ripped off, joints were shattered, crimson spewing onto the floor -- and after each match he was in, The Bull was the one who came out on top. He quickly developed a stubbornly cocky attitude towards others, always turning his nose up to them. To add onto this, he had serious anger management problems. Because he had won so many matches, he felt as though he could have his way with anything else -- and that was when he met Gavroche's mother.
She was a short, petite brunette who always held a smile on her face; always been full of optimism and was keen on her manners. The Bull had first noticed her in the market of District 9, and at that moment, he wanted her -- desperately wanted her, and he vowed that she would be his. Not "his" as his lover of sorts, but "his" as in possession. Upon approaching her the first time, he simply made his presence known before she said she had to leave. He fallowed her and make a second approach, thrusting himself upon her, but she squirmed away. But the third time he went up to her, he took hold of her and carried her away, despite all her screaming and retaliation.
Certain things happened in the month after her kidnapping that shouldn't be mentioned. However, I can say that she was a captive in his house. Confined to only one room, there to play with at his disposal. She had quickly become traumatized, eventually surrendering completely to The Bull. She knew there was no way to escape, and if she managed to get free, she was still scarred for life.
Needless to say, hardly another month passed before Gavroche was conceived.
During the time she was pregnant, The Bull never ceased "playing" with her. She would try to fight back, but he merely overpowered her every time. But as her belly began to swell, she fought back harder and harder, terrified that the unborn baby would be crushed underneath its father's weight. This, however, enraged the man, making him think that she was fully turning against him. He beat her into submission each time before storming off, leaving her locked up in the small room for unknown times.
When Gavroche was born in the room, it gave his mother a renewed sense of needing to survive -- for his sake. Despite the "play dates" The Bull would have with her, she always found time to teach Gavroche everything she knew, and she kept telling him every night: "Find the archer statue. Turn towards the sunrise. Find the Three Legged Dog Tavern. Tell the man with one eye that you're May's son." Of course, the little toddler had no idea what this meant, but it was grooved into his mind to the point where he wouldn't forget.
Whenever it was "play time" for The Bull, he would lock Gavroche in a tiny, dark closet, leaving him to be horrified while listening to the strange sounds coming from beyond the door. He would frequently try to look out from underneath the door, but saw nothing.
When Gavroche was roughly about four (his mother had lost track of the days, and there was no calender for her to use so she guessed his age most of the time), he began showing signs of his CPS. He would spontaneously collapse onto the floor, curl up into a tight ball, crying. Whenever his mother would ask what was wrong, he'd tell her that "his stomach was on fire". Of course, she had no idea what was wrong, so all she could do was cradle him and endure his agonized whimpers until it passed. His father, however, did not take the same approach as she did. When the boy would collapse, he would be kicked by the man, who yelled furiously about giving Gavroche something real to cry about. Gav begged for mercy, sobbing as he was pelted with attacks, eventually being left in a heap in the corner. The attacks grew worse over the days, however, and scarred him for life. Of all the things for a young developing brain to remember, it happened to be when his father raped him. Not once; not twice; but three times. Three times of being pinned down and assaulted, listening to his mother's frantic screams in the background.
What seemed like three years passed by slowly. His mother had been planning an escape for the boy and going over it with him, determined to break free of the small room. When The Bull came in for his daily activities, Gav's mother managed to get above him and put her hands around his neck, strangling him. This being a cue, Gavroche, having not been put into the dark closet yet, bolted out the room door, running down the hallways as best he could without being lost since it was the first time in his life ever being outside the room. He managed to find the front door, though it was locked. Panicking, he raced around, trying all the doors until something grabbed him harshly by the neck. The boy squirmed, feeling his windpipe becoming crushed, so he instinctively curled his head and bit the man's wrist, causing him to let go. He knew there was no way out of the house -- unless he made one. Darting around a corner, he swiped a cast iron skillet off the stove and chucked it at a window, shattering the glass. He quickly used a chair to climb up to and through the window, falling down on the outside. Gavroche then bolted, and by the time his CPS began acting up, he had reached the statue of an archer. While cringing and whimpering in pain, he remembered what his mother had told him, so he spent the night by the statue and in the morning he headed in the direction of the rising sun, reaching an old tavern. Upon entering, he was greeted by a weathered looking, one-eyed bartender who was smiling. But when Gavroche explained that he was May's son, the smile faded from the man's face.
The one-eyed man took Gavroche in, explaining that he was May's brother. Gavroche, although keeping himself physically distant from his uncle, trusted him. Besides, it had been where his mother had told him to go, so why not trust the man? As the boy grew older, he began working in the tavern as a cook, and it was discovered that he was dyslexic. The little time he spent at school was him being bullied because of his CPS and dyslexia, which drove him to drop out when he was roughly 16. He also took up a passion for the trumpet, which he found abandoned in the corner of the building one night. The only person he trusts in the world is his uncle and his mother, though he highly doubts that she's still alive.
