i can't remember a time where being a le roux wasn't both the best and worst thing that's ever happened to me.

maybe that's not fair.

i am actually almost certain that it's not, but i can't help but feel it sometimes.

ever since i was little, i've been kind of the odd one out, the le roux that's not quite a le roux. malachi gave us our legacy, a family of lions, golden-haired and dark eyed, all bronze and gold. he didn't turn us into rebels, we were as such long before he joined the rest of the first tributes as cannon fodder, but he's the one who sealed us in our fates. condemned us to a life of rebellion and discontent, and as much as i admire the impact that he's had on our lives even still today, i hate him for it. i know that it's not his fault, rationally that much i understand. it was a conscious decision, an unwillingness to let his death be in vain. decades later though, we golden-haloed le roux's are ghosts of the boy that he was, nothing compared to the war-torn soldier that the world made him.

we cower in our compound, surround each other like a pride of lions, but we all have our backs up. even my dad and my aunts and uncle, they turn their backs on each other, barely willing to communicate with each other, inhabiting their own worlds inside of our already closed off one.

that's the one thing that i don't know how to forgive.

they keep us in our corners of the world, say that we shouldn't step on each other's toes. uncle john and dad barely speak, two polar opposites who could learn so much from each other if they would just try. but john is gilded and dad stands tall behind a fence lined with barbed wire, a marker screaming 'don't get too close.' it doesn't matter that one of them stands in the light where the other contents himself to the shadows, neither of them is part of the whole, unwilling to come together to realize the legacy that malachi left behind for them.

monsters among men, both of them.

and i just sit here, taking it all in.

for as long as i can remember, i've been on the outside looking in, just taking in this hidden world. i'm not sure what it was, but i wasn't ever really like my family members, especially not like my siblings. or, it's not that i'm not like them, because i suppose we're not actually that different, all three of us putting our minds before our fists, but where they indulge in their intellect, they refuse to put value in the violent, put value in the glory. my cousins, even ridley, they are all fire and brimstone, terrible and glorious and gold and bloody, with sharp teeth, burning brighter than anything else in the entire world. even here, hidden away in the secrets of the le roux compound, their smiles are knives and in their hands they hold the warmth of the sun. they've been locked away from a nation that turned its back on our family, but still, they would die fighting to protect them, to love them, to rebel against a government so many people forget needs rebelling against.

i don't understand how my siblings aren't in awe of that. i don't want to be like them, have no interest in burning away my bones and replacing them with a mold made from iron and stone, but how can you not love that they are so willing to die for a cause that they did not even start? a cause that they have no hope of ever winning?

we children of isaiah are clever, cunning, the brightest minds in every room. there's no doubt that of all my family, i am the best with maps, that i could guide us across the entire nation with just the light from the stars and the direction of the wind through my hair. i have studied the plants known, and the ones without names yet, could make sure we all survive on berries and branches alone if we needed to leave this compound one day and live off the land. if we rebel, and we are forced to live in the mud and the dirt and clean our stolen guns in the trees, i will keep us alive.

i'll fight, and i'll die. i'm a le roux, it's what we do.

but they are lions.

they are rebels.

and i'll never measure up.
