First off, welcome to the site! This guide is intended to serve as a kind of survival manual as you get acquainted with what we do around here, but it's definitely not required reading and might even be kind of overwhelming. Feel free to just look around, experiment, and ask questions instead, but if you're new (or about to join), this might help some.
Please note that the Rules are required reading. On Role-Playing
The Hunger Games RPG is set currently during the 82nd Hunger Games. For the site and your characters, this simply means that there will be no canon characters allowed (no Katniss, Peeta, etc. President Snow is used only by the administrators for Hunger Games announcement purposes) nor will your characters be acquainted with canon characters. Knowing that Caesar Flickerman exists is fine, but being best friends with Katniss' parents is not allowed.
Role-play (RP) takes place mainly in the Capitol and districts. Some miscellaneous areas are available at the bottom of the site's home page and should be used appropriately.
And if I don't know how to role-play?
Role-playing is quite simple and easy to get the hang of. If you've ever written a short story or fanfiction, you can learn how to role-play quickly. RPing is just like writing except you make your own character and control them interacting with someone else (or occasionally something else in the Hunger Games).
Helpful links:Roleplaying Guides courtesy of our RP Tutors. These guides are long so you don't have to read them all at once.
Roleplay Tutoring is offered in Private and Public formatting. Just post a piece of roleplaying you have attempted and a tutor will reply with tips.
I've never read The Hunger Games!
All you need to read is this to catch up.
What format should I use to post?
THGRPG is relatively free-for-all so you can use first-person, third-person, or even second-person perspective if you want. The most popular posting styles' tags (for the sake of aesthetic appeal) include [blockquote*], [*size=1], [justify*], and [*color=something] without the asterisks and with the respective closing tags as seen here.
On Character Creation
Character Creation Guides can be read at your leisure. They are quite thorough and entertaining (our tutors have great senses of humor). However, if you were to read any guide before making a character, it should be How to Create an Acceptable Character with Thundy's How NOT To Make A Character as a supplement.
If you want to base your character's looks off of a celebrity (this is optional), please check the Face Claim to make sure they are not already taken.
Upon filling out the Character App (make sure you're logged in!) using the Character Template or another application style in the Character Creation board, please wait for a staff member to approve of the character before role-playing. If the staff member asks you to make changes, please do so. In the meantime....
On Socializing
One of the most wonderful things about THGRPG is its tight-knit, inclusive community. Members have different writing levels on this site and have different interests and backgrounds in real life that they share with everyone.
The best way to get acquainted with your fellow members is to use our site's Slack channel.
The cBox (chatbox on left sidebar of the site) is on a premium account for us, so it refreshes by itself and you can make your own profile by clicking "Profile" under "Go" to ensure that no one will impersonate you.
Other places you may be interested in posting at to get to know your fellow members are the Introductions board and the District Square.
* Please post and chat with proper grammar and spelling -- it makes everything easier to read.On the Hunger Games
Our Hunger Games occur three times per real-life year. We usually go in succession with about a month or two in between for planning -- the librarians clean out the characters and claims while the Gamemakers (selected staff member(s), varies every Game) finish off final details. Activity, reaping, and face claim checks are done through our Character Warehouse.
Tesserae is offered before each Hunger Games. One tessera costs $150 game money. The reaping is done by a randomizer. The reaping times are announced ahead of time and volunteering is acceptable only if a tribute steps down or fails to post an "acceptance of tribute status" post.
Muttation contests are held before each Hunger Games -- the winning muttation, as selected by the Gamemaker(s), will be used in the Hunger Games.
Hunger Games rules are posted here.On the History of the Site
The Hunger Games RPG is the largest, oldest, and most active Hunger Games RPG in the world. It is also the second oldest fansite in the Hunger Games fandom.
Created by Lulu in September 2008, this website went through many tumults in its first year and experimented many times with the 54th Hunger Games until it finally became what it is now. Filled with over 10,000 members and thousands more characters, THGRPG is constantly bettering itself in the hopes that its members enjoy both writing and chatting in this makeshift world of Panem.
