District Four Tournament Day Two: Krigel vs Grey

The air seems to swirl with a sense of refreshment, an understanding of a previous day of fighting completed. While mist mingles within the shifting rays of the early sun, the ocean seems to sing a slow lullaby. A call to the sand on the shore it sweeps over. A dance with the moon which has now been usurped by the sun. And among it all there is the constant, the figures which stand as shadows to this mural.

It's impossible not to know the boy before me today, his name is one etched into the history of the District. However, you do not revel him anymore than the girl you fought the day before. Will he seek something more than the stirring of the sand and the swell of the sea? Or does he keep to simplicities like me, to the glinting of tridents and movements of muscles.

I take him in entirely, there isn't an ounce of him I don't look at as my shirt slips into the sand. My hands tilt my trident as the sound of a seagull crests over head and his voice enters the air first. Hm, he's much different from the other girl.

"Sure." You concur with a shrug. His trident scratching over your chest. "I'll follow your lead then."

Beneath my feet the sand is cool, damp from the wafting mist. The ocean is quieter today, but it's still there. The ever present waves still roll lazily over the beach. Most mornings I'd be out there right now, lost in a burgeoning barrel. Today is different though, designated to this tournament. In this moment, as my ears take in the sound of the coast, the entirety of my attention belongs to Leonidas Krigel. His style is fascinating to watch unfurl before me. 

A small tsk, teeters out from a frown as my trident's teeth only skate across his forearm. He was quicker than I expected, but at least that's now something I know and can account for. However, that's not all I learn about him. As his body bends and he cart wheels across the sand, a single eyebrow of mine raises. He wasn't kidding when he said he doesn't mind the dramatics. 

Despite his movements though, when his spear strikes it touches only air. My feet find their footing again after narrowly jumping to the side. He's good, strong and skilled. His voice is that of honey while his attacks are dangerously deceiving. I recenter myself and return a small smirk. 

"Alright, I've always loved games."

My trident glints and my eyes never leave his frame.

"But I admit, I've always been pretty competitive."

It’s as though we are mirrors, circling each other in the mist. Each of our tridents tease at the air and again we are face to face on the damp sand. However, this beach calls for blood. I’m not as much for the dramatics as Leonidas, but I do know that the longer this fight goes on the more dangerous our daggers could become. I have to break free of whatever is making me his carbon copy.

I breathe into the moment, into this time. Right now this boy is fighting to fight his family in the next round, I need to match his desire. No, I need to burn it away with the flames of my own passion. But what is it I’m here for? Fame and reputation? No. I’m only here to feel something. My smile flickers, and small scratches don’t do enough for me. It’s time to play my version of this game.

”Not at all, I’d say we’re neck and neck.” 

I move.

“I bet we’re given the audience their money’s worth, huh?”

I should have expected the roll, for the sand to swirl through the air as his trident tore towards my skin. Alas, this time the teeth rip into my leg and the waves, or maybe it's the crowd, roars. My blood burgeons onto the beach, and the seed of war which this District clings so tightly to blooms finally. I don't let him see anything more than my grit though, this isn't the first scar that will stain my skin. I've seen far worse than this. 

"Ah, finally got me huh?"

I close my eyes for a moment and lean into the pain, into the throbs ringing up from my leg. It makes my heartbeat quicken, makes my teeth clatter. It feels and I want to share the sensation. I spoke truly when I told him I'm competitive, it would be a shame to go back on my word now.

When my eyes open my trident glints in the sunbeams. He isn't that far from me now, sand still scattered across his body. How will I answer his call? Will I crash down on him like an incoming wave or recede into a still sea? A beach breeze rustles my hair.

"You're on a roll now aren't you?"

I say returning his wink. Flirting doesn't take the effort of emotions after all.

"I guess I'll play by your rules."

My trident pierces the ground as my body vaults into the air. The entire movement is dramatic, but it's one I've done a thousand times. The trident frees itself as I float by his side.

"Hmph."

I mutter to myself as I land wincefully onto the sand. While the Kirgel boy seems caught up in the scratch to his face, which apparently has become a trademark of mine, I'm busy reassessing my last strike as well. In all honesty I had been aiming for his shoulder, he's right that I'm not quite trying to blind him. However, given his fight the previous day, I find it hard to believe that he would be one to worry about such an ailment. 

"Nope." I admit. "Isn't the blinding more your style after all?"

A smirk steals across my face full of false bravado. This guy is all about the show, his appearance to those watching. I couldn't be more opposite. I don't care what they think or say, hell, half the time I pretend they aren't even there. I'm here for myself, for the entertainment it brings me. Despite his actions though, I sense he might be here for the same reason.

His proclamation of emotion precedes a strike exactly as he claimed, full of emotions. It's almost too easy to smack away with a well timed kicked, kind of like a wave building on the horizon. I choose to be the wave that creeps up on you, the one that's breaking over your head by the time you even notice it's there.

"Don't get too emotional now, you'll ruin the fun."

I dive swiftly forward, sand swirly around my guiding leg. 

"We're just playing after all, right?"

This time his strike sears my voice into a hiss as my breath breaks for a moment. It was fast, one moment sliding beneath his stomach to the next feeling the blood rush down my back. Even now as I stand turned away from him I can feel the scarlet stickily seeping into my pants. If I don't react soon they'll blow the whistle, deem it the final strike. But I'm not finished yet, pain is only a feeling after all and I've never been very good with feelings to begin with. 

A beam of light breaks through the sheen of morning and warms the strand of my hair that I sweep from my face. Wiping over my lips my tongue tastes the salt of sweat and the beach breeze isn't enough to cool my skin. There is nothing as deadly in the ocean as a set of waves, one after another in swift succession. I turn back towards him with small smirk piercing through the pain. 

"Wouldn't dream of it." 

I take in a breath of salt and drive myself forward. The sand seems to surround me as I run, my trident leading my body. 

"I'm not finished yet either."
