There were times when he wondered what it would’ve like to have lived on the mainland. Watching the folks as they left after the first day of the tournament, he wondered where their homes were. Did they live along the beach? Did their houses back up on the rocks and sand? Or did they live like he’d seen the other districts do, in towns, with well paved roads and houses all pressed so close together, you couldn’t breathe?

He started pulling the wood from the shoreline, and pulled out the rope and tarp from his boat. He’d packed enough to make a little lean-to, enough to sleep under and be protected, should the rains come in unexpectedly. At the same time, he’d be able to look out on the stars until he was able to fall asleep.

Gander knelt to start his fire, bringing together the flint to start a shower of sparks. The wood caught and smoked, a yellowish red fire starting without much trouble. He sat on his rear, in his breeches, shirt off and body exposed to the air. He poked the fire with a stick, watching the sparks take flight to the sky. He kept at it for a while, until he heard someone approaching from the dunes.

“Ey now, who’s this then?” He called out over the waves. He hadn’t expected to be disturbed.

After losing that first round of the tournament, you wanted a drink. You’d surely be punished when you got home, so why not try to numb the pain before it started? You had a six pack of beer in your backpack that you’d brought with you. Surely it’d be a little warm by now, but it was still beer, and you needed a drink, so you didn’t care.

Taking one of the beers out of your bag, you then zipped the rest shut into your bag and put it back onto your back. Deciding to roam the beach that night before going home, you sipped your beer as you went. As you walked, you spotted a small fire and someone standing by it. Deciding to walk closer through the chilly night air, a voice with a strange yet familiar accent called out asking who you were. You knew who was talking to you. It was Gander, who you’d just fought in the tournament. You walked closer so that he could see you, and introduced yourself.

”It’s Zedekiah,” you said.

Gander heard the boy introduce himself, and tensed. He hadn’t been sure what to expect from the folks on the mainland, especially someone that had lost to Gander straightaway. He’d been taught to minimize as much interaction with the mainlanders as possible to save from possible mistranslations or mistakes. There was a reason they’d been so successful in keeping a grip on their island for so long, and it wasn’t by going and making themselves well known to the people of four.

Still, the boy standing on the shore seemed harmless (he had fallen to Gander, after all), and could’ve kept walking if he’d wanted. Gander grew curious then, seeing as this was one of the few times he’d ever spent more than an afternoon on the mainland, and decided that, as dangerous as it might’ve been, would offer a chance for the boy to join him.

“All’s right then, yah sit yer duff down by’n we’s can watch the stars, yeh?” Gander said. He pointed down by the sand in front of the fire, and moved to take a seat, crossing his legs and leaning back in the sand. “Fight’s good today, jus’ need a bit o’ patience.”
